Clarence (1922) -- Lost Silent ?
5 July 2015 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

Mr. Wheeler ( Edward Martindel ), the head of a temperamental family, hires a former soldier, Clarence ( Wallace Reid ), to do odd jobs around his house. Clarence immediately falls in love with Violet Pinney ( Agnes Ayres ), the governess, who is suspected by Mrs. Wheeler ( Kathlyn Williams ) to be the object of her husband's affections and resented by Cora Wheeler ( May McAvoy ). When Clarence and Violet prevent Cora from eloping with money-seeking Hubert Stem ( Adolphe Menjou ), Mr. Wheeler's private secretary, Stem finds a clipping about Charles Smith, a deserter. He shows it to Mr. Wheeler and insists that Charles Smith and Clarence are one and the same. Wheeler is inclined to believe Stem, since he has noticed his wife's admiring glances toward Clarence. But a letter arrives revealing Clarence to be a university professor about to regain his position, Violet accepts him, and all are reconciled.

This 1922 silent comedy/romance was based on the play Clarence, a Comedy in Four Acts by Booth Tarkington. The film version was produced by Famous Players-Lasky Corporation and distributed through Paramount Pictures. Boasting a fine cast of silent films stars, sadly this film remains lost.
