A Tragic Loss For Silent Cinema
29 July 2015 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

Kenneth Harlan and Marie Prevost play a jazz-age married couple who think nothing of spending lot's of money. The least responsible of the two is Gloria ( Marie Prevost ), but Anthony ( Kenneth Harlan ) isn't far behind. Everything goes great, so long as Harlan's wealthy grandfather, Adam Patch ( Tully Marshall ) is around to foot the bills. But when Patch dies, the profligate duo are forced to look for work. Once they've fattened their bank account, the couple goes back to their old self-indulgent, lifestyle, but a close brush with death brings them to their senses.

This was the first film adaptation of the novel The Beautiful and Damned by F. Scott Fitzgerald. To publicize the film, Jack L. Warner, announced that the film's stars, Kenneth Harlan and Marie Prevost, would marry on the film's set. The publicity stunt worked and thousands of fans sent gifts and letters to the couple. However, Warner was unaware that Prevost was still secretly married to her first husband, Sonny Gerke. The Los Angeles Mirror got wind of Prevost's first marriage and ran a story with the headline "Marie Prevost Will be a Bigamist if She Marries Kenneth Harlan". Warner was livid over the negative publicity and Prevost's failure to disclose her first marriage despite the fact that the publicity stunt was his idea. Warner quickly arranged an annulment and, when the publicity surrounding the scandal died down, Prevost married actor Kenneth Harlan in October 1924. The two starred in several films together including The Marriage Circle and Bobbed Hair. Prevost and Harlan separated in May 1927 and Prevost filed for divorce. Later that year, she was granted an interlocutory divorce. However, the couple reconciled in June 1928. The reconciliation proved to be brief and their divorce was finalized in January 1929.

Interestingly, The Beautiful and Damned did well at the box office and critics were generally favourable. F. Scott Fitzgerald, however, disliked the film. He later wrote to a friend stating, "Its by far the worst movie I've ever seen in my life-cheap, vulgar, ill-constructed and shoddy. We were utterly ashamed of it."

Besides starring Prevost and Harlan, Harry Myers and Louise Fazenda provided the comedy relief to this cautionary fable. Tragically this silent film now remains lost.
