Though Rod McLean ( Frank Mayo ) has rescued him from savages, Tony Heritage ( Lawrence Hughes ) steals from Rod and goes to France, where he marries Joie Malet ( Louise Lorraine ). Joie's father, Capt. Jean Malet ( J. J. Lanoe ), disapproves and takes her to a South Sea island; but is forced to employ Tony when he follows. Rod, who also works for Captain Malet, falls in love with Joie even though he knows she is married to some unknown man. Discovering that Tony is inciting the natives to burn the island's church and that he is Joie's husband, Rod pursues Tony and returns alone to marry Joie.
This 1922 drama was based on the novel The Altar Stairs by G.B. Lancaster, starring Frank Mayo, Louise Lorraine along with Boris Karloff in one of his early film appearances. Produced by the Universal Pictures Corporation, the survival status of The Altar Stairs is listed as unknown, sadly suggesting it is now a lost silent film.
