Millionaire Henry Lester ( Lionel Atwill ) is very wary of women because he was jilted in early youth by a girl in favour of a man she thought richer than he. Now he has fallen in love with Sally Raeburn ( Madge Kennedy ) but Sally is chaperoned by her "aunt," Mrs. Steese ( Zelda Sears ), a scheming adventuress who rescued her from poverty and has made Sally promise to "marry for money" to repay her. Sally returns Lester's affections, but he discovers the scheme and vows revenge. He rescues a man named Hastings from the gutter and passes him off to Mrs. Steese as a wealthier and more desirable match for Sally. His scheme works too well, and he finds himself jealous. Sally and Lester are reconciled, however, and she agrees to become his wife.
This 1921 silent drama was based from the novel, The Trap by Maximilian Foster, produced by the Goldwyn Pictures Corporation, starring Madge Kennedy. The survival status of The Highest Bidder is now listed as unknown.
