Illogical plot but some very funny moments
6 April 2005 | by (Putney, VT) – See all my reviews

Why Buster and the opera troupe wind up in a particular house baffles the logic of any and all screenwriters, but why quibble. This neatly divides in half - first half in a bank, second half in a "haunted house." There are some gem details in the first half: the outside lock on the bank has a bottle cap on it which needs to be pried off before the keyhole is exposed; Buster must open a clock face to change the time even though there is no glass in the face. Then there is the famous glue on the dollar bills sequence, which drags on a bit too long, but is initially very funny.

Once we get to the house, we see some very clever stop action special effects in the sequence where two men dressed as skeletons, assemble a man from pieces and he comes to life. There's Buster playing traffic cop to the many "ghosts" coming and going through the upstairs hallway. There is the climactic brilliant stairway to heaven set with its subsequent spiral to hell.

So throw logic out the window and enjoy a series of gags that come fast and furious.

KINO's print is crisp and bright with deep blue tinting for the few exterior night scenes. Their score is a violin/piano duo.
