The River's End (1920) -- Lost Silent ?
8 August 2015 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

After a three-year hunt, Canadian mounted police officer Derwent Conniston ( Lewis Stone ) captures his prey, John Keith ( Lewis Stone ), the accused murderer of Judge Kirkstone ( George Nichols ). Before they can return to the post, Conniston becomes ill and is nursed by his prisoner who confides in the Mountie the story of his justified assault on Kirkstone when the judge threatened Keith's father. The Mountie believes him and, knowing that death is near, suggests that Keith, who bears a remarkable resemblance to his captor, assume his identity. Keith does so and, upon returning to the post, announces his prisoner's death. The deception convinces everyone but Shan Tung ( Togo Yamamoto ), who remains silent because he knows the identity of the true murderer, Kirkstone's son Peter ( Charles West ). Shan Tung is in love with Peter's sister Miriam ( Jane Novak ) and, under threat of exposing her brother, forces the girl to consent to marry him. Meanwhile, Conniston's younger sister Mary Josephine ( Marjorie Daw ) arrives at the post, and Keith falls in love with her. When Miriam tells Keith about the power that Shan Tung holds over her, he confronts him, and in the ensuing struggle, the blackmailer is killed. Keith, no longer able to contain his love for Mary Josephine, tells her the truth and then departs for Saskatchewan. After his departure, she learns the whole story from Peter and, realizing that she loves the man she thought was her brother, follows him until the two share a joyous reunion.

This 1920 silent drama was based on the novel, The River's End by James Oliver Curwood. Produced by Marshall Neilan Productions and directed by Marshall Neilan and Victor Heerman. The film starred Lewis Stone, Marjorie Daw and Jane Novak and was filmed on locations in Big Bear Valley, San Bernardino National Forest, California, along with sets designed by the art director Ben Carré. Currently the status of this film is listed as unknown, sadly suggesting it may now be a lost silent.
