Lady Rose's Daughter (1920) - Sad Loss
28 February 2015 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

Born out of wedlock to Lady Rose ( Elsie Ferguson ), Julie le Breton ( Elsie Ferguson ) is taken under the guardianship of a distant relative, Lady Henry Delafield ( Ida Waterman ), who never lets the girl forget her disgraceful parentage. Lady Delafield begins to think that Julie is scheming to ensnare her nephew Jacob ( Holmes Herbert ) , but Julie is really infatuated with the dashing Captain Warkworth ( David Powell ) . After attempting to further Warkworth's career by introducing him to the visiting War Minister ( Warren Cook ) , Lady Delafield, enraged that Julie has been bothering their guest, turns the girl out of the house. In a fit of desperation, Julie goes to Warkworth's quarters, followed by Jacob, who loves the girl. When Jacob exposes Warkworth's engagement to an heiress, Julie, devastated, attempts suicide. Taken to a hospital, she is discovered by Jacob, who convinces his aunt that Julie should not be punished for the sins of her mother. Apprised of Warkworth's untimely death, Julie finally accepts Jacob's love.

This 1920 silent drama was based on a Broadway play performed in 1903 starring actress Ida Waterman, who also performed in the film version. The film version was produced by Famous Players-Lasky and released through Paramount Pictures, starring the popular Elsie Ferguson. As the sad case with many of the accomplished Elsie Ferguson's silent films, Lady Rose's Daughter is also considered a lost film.
