" Mary Goes Treasure Hunting "
16 September 2013 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

This lost Pickford film was the third directed by William Desmond Taylor with scenario by Frances Marion. The story centered on a hoax that an aged recluse plays on his grandson. In the old man's will, a chart showing buried treasure is hidden in a book, that accidentally is sold to a second-hand bookstore, owned by Angus MacTavish ( Spottiswoode Aitkin ) where Mary MacTavish ( Mary Pickford ) his granddaughter discovers it. She and her boyfriend Jim Gleason ( Douglas MacLean ), a young author, meet the grandson, Willie Carlton ( Robert Gordon ), and he agrees to share the treasure. Pretending to be geologists, they dig it up. The "treasure" proves to be a box containing nothing more exciting than a note saying " good health." Fortunately, the grandson discovers that the hunt was only a test, and a genuine fortune is held in trust, and after selling one of his novels Jim and Mary become engaged.

Critics praised actor Douglas MacLean for his performance in Mary Pickford's last film released by Artcraft under Paramount, as the actress had now signed with First National for $675.000 a year plus percentage of the profits. First National gave her total independence, from the selection of the story to the final cut. Mary Pickford was now her own independent producer. Adolph Zukor let her go, as his advisers predicted she would fall on her face and would come crawling back to Paramount. But Mary Pickford would go onto have her biggest financial success, with her next spectacular film, Daddy-Long-Legs.
