John Ford is becoming more and more like Alfred Hitchcock in his cinematography narrative. He allows the viewer to read and feel his feels rather than just watch them. In this film, the camera is a trespasser, an intruder who is probing key situations that are taking place during Ford's recreation of the old American West. He enables you to get inside the characters, to share their dilemma and to connect with their humanity. I've never regarded the Western as something that is emotionally engaging, but having watched some of Ford's Westerns I've had a complete Damascus Road experience.
