Harold's Odyssey
12 March 2004 | by (London, England) – See all my reviews

The 26 year old Harold Lloyd is the 20th century Odysseus in this short film. He uses cinematic language to document his journey through life during his 20's, but empowers it with the grammar of isolation. It is this ingredient that affords us entry into his humanity no matter what decade we view him. Both Lonesome Luke and the glasses character possess the vocabulary of the outsider, and these one and two reelers allow him to mature the theme of loneliness and ostracization. There was a very intimate part of the film where the camera dollies back slightly to allow him privacy during his moment of rejection. It was a touching moment, and emphasized his solitary condition.
