The Savage (1917) - Presumed Lost ?
17 August 2016 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

Important note: This is not a film review. It is my ambition to add as many silent film synopsis of films that have a survival status of unknown or presumed lost. I try to do as much research as I can and it is not my intention to deceive anyone, for sometimes the film does exist and some presumed lost films are still being discovered. I am more than delighted if someone has knowledge of a film listed as lost but survives, as I wish all silent films did survive. I hope the reader enjoys this brief synopsis.

When Marie Louise ( Ruth Clifford ), the daughter of the town factor, returns home from school, Julio Sandoval ( Monroe Salisbury ), a reckless young half-breed ruled by his animal instincts, develops a passion for the girl, even though she is engaged to Captain McKeever ( Allen Sears ) of the mounted police. Meeting Marie when she is alone in the woods one day, the half-breed carries her to his cabin on the mountain top where he collapses from an attack of mountain fever brought on by overexertion. Taking pity on Julio, Marie nurses him back to health, and when the rescue party arrives, she does not betray him. Upon her return to town, Marie learns that McKeever has been taken prisoner by the outlaw Joe Bedotte ( Arthur Tavares ). Marie pleads with Julio to rescue the captain, and in gratitude, he goes to the mountains, frees the captain and surrenders his own life as a consequence.

This 1917 silent drama was produced by Bluebird Photoplays, starring Ruth Clifford and Monroe Salisbury. Colleen Moore plays the part of Lizette, a half-breed like Julio. This would be one of several "exotic" roles Colleen would play during her career, including her part as a Persian in The Devil's Claim. After this film, Colleen went on to work at the Selig Polyscope Company.

The survival status of The Savage (1917) is listed in the Progressive Silent Film List as presumed lost.
