Storyline

Young Magda is stifled by the regimentation and provincial thinking of the small village she grew up in, and the result is that her parents throw her out of the house. Determined to make her own way, she heads to the big city to be a professional singer. There she falls in love with a cad named Kellner and marries him, only to discover that the marriage was phony and now she's alone and has a child to support. She's reduced to singing in seamy dance halls and even on the street until one day her former singing teacher hears her and takes her under his wing. Her problems aren't over, however--her father still wants nothing to do with her, and now her phony "husband" Kellner shows up. Written by frankfob2@yahoo.com

Magda (1917) -- Lost Silent
30 July 2015 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

Magda ( Clara Kimball Young ) rebels against the rigid regimentation and narrow viewpoint of her small village and is banished from home. Self-reliant and proud, she goes to the city to study singing with a seemingly limitless potential until she falls in love with Kellner ( Edward Fielding ) and agrees to marry him. Magda discovers too late that the ceremony was a ruse and finds herself alone with a child to support. While she is singing in the street and in cheap dance halls, Magda's former teacher hears her and under his tutelage, she develops into a great artist. A reconciliation is effected between Magda and her parents, and when Kellner agrees to marry her now that she is famous, her father insists that she go through with the ceremony to save the family honor. Magda refuses, and in a rage, her father is about to kill her when he dies of shock, now Magda must decide her own destiny, as a free woman.

This 1917 silent drama was produced by house Clara Kimball Young Film Corporation and directed by Emile Chautard. Starring the popular actress, Clara Kimball Young, sadly Magda now remains a lost silent film.
