John Silverwood ( Rupert Julian ) and 'Kentuck' Windfield Gordon ( Harry Carter ) are partners of a California mine. One day the Long brothers try to jump their claim, and 'Kentuck' is killed defending the property. John sends his dead partner's daughter Nannie, (Ruth Clifford) to live with her Uncle Henry Gordon ( also played by Carter ) back in Kentucky. Uncle Henry has remarried another woman who has her own daughter, Rachel ( Myrtle Reeves ) and the two view Nannie as a poor relation and rival. The orphan girl is mistreated, but Aunt Chlorindy ( Lucretia Harris ) known to Nannie as the mammy who raised her, protects the girl, finding her refuge with Mrs. Morgan, a wealthy widow living nearby. It is there, that Nannie meets Tom Boling ( Emory Johnson ) a rich young bachelor who falls in love with her, much to the annoyance of Rachel and her mother. Tom and Nannie are happily married with John Silverwood attending the wedding, rich from striking gold, he falls in love with Mrs. Morgan.

A Kentucky Cinderella was adapted from an 1898 short story by Francis Hopkinson Smith. It was released by Bluebird Photoplays, a subsidiary of Universal Studios, in June 1917. The 1921 film Desperate Youth is also based on the same short story. Both are now considered lost silent films.
