Storyline

Gretchen, an abandoned child, is raised by Frau Van Lom, the nastiest woman in the little Dutch village of Olenburg. As she grows up, Gretcen's few moments of happiness are those she spends with Carl, who is also an abandoned child, but who is raised by a poor family. When Gretchen refuses to marry a wealthy old man in exchange for his paying off Frau von Lom's mortgage, she is framed for theft and jailed. On top of that, Carl is taken away from the village and sent to the palace of the king. Complications ensue.

Still A Lost Silent
20 May 2016 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

In the little Dutch village of Olenberg, Gretchen, a foundling, is raised by the shrewish Frau Van Lorn ( Marcia Harris ). Gretchen's ( June Caprice ) only joy is her love for Carl ( Harry Hilliard ), the foundling son of impoverished parents. A series of calamities befall poor Gretchen when an old man, Mynheer Van Haas, offers to pay off Frau Van Lorn's mortgage in return for his marriage to Gretchen. Subsequently, Gretchen is falsely accused of theft and jailed. While mourning the loss of his sweetheart, Carl is taken away to the Palace of Olenberg where it is discovered that he is actually the heir to the throne, and was stolen from the king and queen as a baby. Carl accepts the crown, rescues Gretchen, and makes her his queen.

This 1917 silent drama was produced by the Fox Film Corporation, starring June Caprice. Sadly as with many of the actresses films, this six reel silent is listed as lost.
