Storyline

When headstrong young Bab Archibald comes home from school for a vacation, her father--trying to teach his spendthrift daughter the value of money--makes a deal with her: he will deposit $1000 in her bank account, but that will be her allowance for the entire next year. Bab immediately buys a car, and almost as immediately crashes it through a fence and into a milk wagon. She gets arrested for speeding, and after she pays fines and damages, is left with a total bank account of 16 cents. She takes a job driving a cab in order to make money, and one day a customer leaves something in her cab--a floor plan of the Archibald mansion. Realizing that he must be a burglar, she sets a trap for him--but things don't turn out quite the way she expected. Written by frankfob2@yahoo.com

Bab's Burglar (1917) - Lost Silent
16 September 2015 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

When Bab Archibald ( Marguerite Clark ) returns home from school for vacation, her indulgent father ( Frank Losee ) deposits one thousand dollars in her bank account with the understanding that this is her entire allowance for the next year. Embarking vigorously upon her career as a spendthrift, Bab buys a car which she promptly smashes through a fence and backs into a milk-wagon. Arrested for speeding, Bab is forced to settle her fines, leaving her with a total of sixteen cents. Taking a job as a cab driver to recoup her finances, Bab discovers a floor plan of the Archibald house that one of her customers leaves in her cab. Assuming that the man is a burglar, Bab waits outside the house and sees him enter through a window. Locking all the doors and windows, Bab summons the family by firing a revolver, only to discover that the alleged burglar is really her sister's suitor Harry ( Guy Coombs ) who has come to elope with Leila ( Helen Greene ).

This 1917 silent comedy was based on the short story "Bab's Burglar" by Mary Roberts Rinehart, produced by the Famous Players Film Company starring popular actress Marguerite Clark. Some location photography was taken at the Maxine Elliott Theatre in New York, New York. Sadly, Bab's Burglar remains a lost silent film.
