American Methods (1917) - Lost Silent ?
10 February 2016 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

William Armstrong ( William Farnum ), an American of French descent, inherits an iron mine in France. Accompanied by his sister Betty ( Florence Vidor ), he sails for France to take charge of the business. Claire ( Jewel Carmen ), the daughter of the Marquise de Beaulieu, lives with her mother and brother Octave ( Alan Forrest ) in the village. She is betrothed to Gaston ( Bertram Grassby ), Duc de Bligny, a poor nobleman, who is loved by Marie Moulinet ( Lillian West ), a wealthy manufacturer's daughter. When Gaston learns that the de Beaulieu family has lost its fortune, he jilts Claire and marries Marie instead. Claire in turn marries Armstrong, who has loved her since they first met, and Octave begins to court Betty. Gaston then decides that he loves Claire after all and places her in a compromising position which is interrupted by Armstrong. Angered by Armstrong's thrashing, Gaston tries to shoot the American but is himself fatally wounded. Realizing for the first time her husband's true worth, Claire begs for, and receives, his forgiveness.

This 1917 drama was based from the novel Le maître de forges by Georges Ohnet, produced by The Fox Film Corporation, starring several popular film stars of silent cinema including Alan Forrest, William Farnum, Florence Vidor and Jewel Carmen. The survival status of this five reel film is listed as unknown, sadly suggesting it may now be a lost silent.
