A Lost 1916 Jack Pickford Silent Film, 27 August 2014
Author: PamelaShort from Canada

*** This review may contain spoilers ***

Booth Tarkington's very popular, humorous novel that gently satires the first love of immature seventeen year old William Sylvanus Baxter, was brought to the silent screen in 1916, with Jack Pickford playing the naive young lad. Seventeen year old William has now decided it is time for him to settle down and contemplate an adult way of thinking, until he falls madly in love with Lola Pratt ( Louise Huff ). Desperate to impress the pretty coquette, William ends up spending all of his money on her. Lola could care less about William, however, she agrees to elope with him, then she runs away with George Cooper, ( Walter Hiers ) an older man. Now left heartbroken and despondent, William feels his life is over, until May Parcher ( Winifred Allen ) a childhood friend pays a visit. William concludes that while Lola is gone forever from his life, May is present and willing, so he decides to fall in love with her.

Produced by the Famous Players Film Company, sadly this Jack Pickford film is considered lost. It would have been interesting to watch this early adaptation of the popular novel, starring Jack Pickford who played such youthful characters during this time in his film career, along with the lovely silent screen actress, Louise Huff and a very young Madge Evans, cast as Pickford's bratty kid sister.
