The Eternal Sappho (1916) --- Lost Silent
30 June 2015 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

Two men fall in love with Laura Bruffins ( Theda Bara ) when she becomes a notorious overnight sensation after posing for an artist's sculpture of Sappho. Although one of the men, John Drummond ( Einar Linden ), has a wife ( Mary Martin ), Laura is intent on ruining his marriage until she meets his sweet daughter ( Kittens Reichert ) and decides, for her sake, to end the relationship. Then, just as her second suitor is about to propose, he hears rumours that Laura, who really had been only an innocent bystander, was responsible for the murder of his father, and so he ends his affair with her. Laura then returns to the artist, who had always loved her, but she finds that he committed suicide when he believed that he had lost her. Feeling that she has ruined her own life and the lives of several others, Laura goes insane and dies in the artist's studio, with her body slowly dissolving into the statue of Sappho.

This 1916 drama starring the popular actress Theda Bara, sadly remains a lost silent film.
