The Soul of Broadway (1915) - Lost
14 August 2016 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

It is my ambition to add as many silent film synopsis of films that have a survival status of unknown or presumed lost. I try to do as much research as I can and it is not my intention to deceive anyone, for sometimes the film does exist. I am more than delighted if someone has knowledge of a film listed as lost but survives, as I wish all silent films did survive. I hope the reader enjoys this brief synopsis.

To pay off her debts, Grace Leonard ( Valeska Suratt ) accepts a check from an old, wealthy suitor, then tries to hide the money from William Craig ( William E. Shay ), a young but poor admirer who has just handed her all of his mother's meager savings. Furious, William struggles with Grace and accidentally shoots her in the neck. After spending three years in prison, William falls in love with June Meredith ( Mabel Allen ), the daughter of a rich gambler posing as a businessman. Although she is romantically involved with Mr. Meredith ( Sheridan Block ), Grace nonetheless pursues William after they meet by chance in the Broadway theatre where she is now a star performer. Rejected by William, Grace threatens to expose his past and the truth about Mr. Meredith to an unsuspecting June. Eventually, June overhears Grace attacking William and forgives him everything. Before she can say a word about Mr. Meredith, Grace goes suddenly insane and falls down a stairway to her death.

This 1915 silent drama was produced by the Fox Film Corporation, starring popular vaudeville performer Valeska Suratt starred in her silent screen debut. The survival status The Soul of Broadway is listed in the American Silent Feature Film Database as; No holdings located in archives. Another source suggests it was among the many silent films that were destroyed in a fire at Fox's film storage facility in Little Ferry, New Jersey in July 1937.
