A Tragic Loss
1 April 2016 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

After the Earl of Clanranald ( Charles Kent ) is arrested for conspiracy, his daughter, Lady Katherine ( Lillian Walker ), pleads in court to save him from the block. Failing this, she dons male clothing, a mustache, and goatee to intercept the King's messenger, Sir Harry Richmond ( Darwin Karr ), who is carrying the death warrant. After they drink ale together at an inn, she is forced, to keep up appearances, to share his room. Failing to get the papers that night, she waylays Sir Harry the next morning, stuns him with a bullet, and takes the warrant. When Sir Harry awakens, he finds his assailant unconscious from a sword wound, and discovers that she is a woman. In love, Sir Harry reports that the warrant was stolen. When he is not believed and is subsequently arrested, Lady Katherine, disguised as a man, offers the King ten thousand pounds for her father's pardon and Sir Harry's release. The King releases them, but discovering Lady Katherine's sex, he abducts her. Sir Harry then saves her and they sail to freedom.

This 1915 silent historical/drama was based from the novel Hearts and the Highway by Cyrus Townsend Brady, produced by the Vitagraph Company of America, starring actress Lillian Walker. Tragically, Hearts and the Highway now remains a lost silent film.
