In 'The Rival Demon', Mack Sennett progresses from acting, writing and directing to producing his own material. He set a template for Charles Chaplin to follow as from 1914 when he would make his screen debut in 'Making A Living'. If Sennett and Chaplin felt the need to write their own material to control their career, what more than the Black Englishman to do the same.
