Still A Tragic Loss
4 August 2016 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

In a prologue, author Upton Sinclair describes his methods of researching The Jungle . A panoramic view of the Chicago stockyards is also shown. In the main story, Lithuanian immigrant Jurgis Rudkus ( George Nash ) arrives in Packingtown and through the efforts of his friend Jokubas, secures a job in the stockyards. Soon Jurgis is able to marry Ona ( Gail Kane ), thus saddening Marija ( Alice Marc ), an immigrant girl who loves him. At Jokubas' urging, Jurgis buys a house and is plunged into debt. Meanwhile, stockyard owner John Durham, outraged by the extravagances of his wife and worthless son Freddy, orders a large wage reduction for his workers. During a strike, Ona's stepfather, Antanas ( Robert Payton Gibbs ), becomes ill, the family is evicted, her sister Katrina dies of industrial poisoning, and Marija is drugged and raped by Durham's Freddy ( Ernest Evers ). Ona then has sex with foreman Connor in exchange for money to feed her starving child, only to learn of the infant's death. When Ona tells Jurgis, he throws Connor into a cattle pen where the foreman is killed. Ona later dies and Jurgis is imprisoned. Upon his release, Jurgis, unable to find the rest of his family attends a Socialist Party rally, where he is inspired to champion their cause. When he saves a woman from drowning herself, he finds that she is Marija, now a prostitute. Together they then work for the establishment of a "cooperative commonwealth."

This 1914 powerful silent drama was an adaptation of the 1906 book of the same name by Upton Sinclair and produced by All-Star Feature Corporation, starring George Nash and Gail Kane. The Jungle still remains a tragic loss for silent cinema and many fans hold out hope a copy survives and resurfaces.
