This is an effective early silent mystery melodrama, wherein a mischievous housekeeper poisons an old woman's mind against her nephew and niece, getting her to will all her money to her. She then proceeds to poison her. The doomed woman's attempts to phone for help go awry as crossed wires interrupt her call to the police station. However, fate brings the interceptor of her call into the story in time to save the doomed nephew, who is accused of the murder. It is tightly directed and believably acted with Ina Hammer very effective as the murderous housekeeper. Note the similar story set-up in Murnau's later TARTUFFE, where he uses the Moliere play to point up the villain to the intended victim. Worth checking out. Available in the Thannhouser video series.
