Storyline

The wily deacon in this bucolic story is very much attracted by a charming widow. One morning as he is about to pay her a call, the village lawyer is there before him with a bad bit of news about her mortgage. The deacon overhears this and he is not so attentive a lover after his eavesdropping. A few days later the deacon, while passing along the village street, sees a messenger boy drop a telegram and when he picks it up he finds to his surprise, that it is addressed to the widow. His curiosity is aroused and as the message is only partly sealed he cannot resist the temptation to open it and learn its contents. It bears good news to the widow; her financial straits are now over. Hurriedly the deacon seals the envelope and hastens after the boy who dropped the telegram. Then he takes advantage of the opportunity to admonish the lad for his carelessness. He hurries to the widow's home by a different route from that of the boy so as to get there and congratulate her after he hears the ... Written by Moving Picture World synopsis
