Storyline

Old Mother Rigby, the village witch of a quaint New England settlement in colonial days, makes for herself a scarecrow, to protect her garden. She is so pleased with her work that she brings it to life, by making it smoke her magic pipe, telling the newly created man (whom she names "Lord Feathertop"), that as long as he breathes the tobacco smoke he will remain handsome and living. She sends the fine new gentleman to woo the Squire's daughter. At the wedding feast the girl learns the real nature of her suitor, by seeing his reflection in a mirror of truth. Lord Feathertop is really in love and he has seen for himself that he is only a "contraption" of ragged old clothes with sticks for legs and pumpkin for a head. He rushes home to the witch's house and declares that he cannot live without love. Breaking the pipe which has kept him alive, the magic ended, he falls to the floor as a scarecrow.
