Hester Prynne has left Holland in advance of her husband, Roger, to join the colonists in Salem, Maxx. Roger follows her to the new world but upon landing in New England is captured by Indians and Hester waits for him in vain. There has never been much love in their marriage, Roger being an old man and she a comely young woman. Rev. Arthur Dimmesdale, the handsome Young minister of the Salem community, is revered and beloved by his parishioners. He meets Hester clandestinely and an unlawful love is the result. When Hester is discovered with a baby, a mother but not a wife, she is arrested, tried and condemned to stand upon the public pillory with her child and for the remainder of her life to wear conspicuously on her breast the letter "A." As she stands on the raised platform, the governor of the colony commands her to divulge the name of the father of the child. She refuses. The Rev. Master Dimmesdale is asked to persuade her to reveal her secret. He addresses her, and tells her if ... Written by Moving Picture World synopsis

Appeals with more than ordinary strength
18 January 2016 | by (Chicago) – See all my reviews

This picture is the most notable film of the week. The story by Hawthorne is so well known to a majority of those who will see this picture that its recapitulation seems unnecessary. The Imp players have reproduced the salient features of the tale with wonderful fidelity to facts and have made of them such fascinating bits of characterization that those who see cannot but admire. Hester Prynne's disgrace and her years of shame appeal very strongly to the emotions. Her loyalty to Dimmesdale who was responsible for her downfall, her public degradation during long years, her rehabilitation at last, only to have her lover fall dead in her arms, make a picture which it would be difficult to praise too highly. The characters are reproduced as they might reasonably be expected to be. There is a quiet beauty and dignity about Hester, even in her disgrace, which appeals with more than ordinary strength. The picture has seized upon and has emphasized the salient points in the story . It is good and will be popular. The audience sees the scenes change with unusual attention. - The Moving Picture World, May 13, 1911
