The Wrong Choice
boblipton30 March 2021
Two men want to wed Lottie Lyell: lieutenant Augustus Neville and smuggler. Raymond Longford. She chooses Longford, and Neville resigns his commission and heads off to Australia. However, a smuggler as a fiancee carries certain risks.

Although star/director Longford would prosper for many years, this very early movie by him shows a certain unsteadiness in directing for the screen. The action proceeds at an slow and erratic pace, He does have a good eye for scenery and direction, and the early sequence o Miss Lyell being made Queen of the May is very charming, and his choice of where to shoot the outdoor shots is very scenic.

The Romantic Story of Margaret Catchpole review
JoeytheBrit23 May 2020
An Australian movie loosely based on a true story that is based largely in Britain. Lottie Lyell - considered by many to be Australia's first movie star - plays the title character, who finds herself shipped off to the former colony after trying to help her smuggler lover (director Raymond Longford) escape the clutches of the law. An uneven film - the ending of which is now lost - in which moments of over-emoting alternate with performances of comparative restraint for the time, and with seemingly endless shots of characters walking slowly towards the camera or riding horses.
