Storyline

John Braham is discharged by Farmer Jones, and is told to call in the evening for his pay. When he arrives he is horrified at the sight that meets his gaze as he enters the cottage. Farmer Jones is lying dead with a blood-stained poker at his side. Neighbors enter just at the moment Braham is looking at the poker, and he is accused of the crime. He is sentenced, but manages to escape. In his flight he stops at the house of a poor widow. He begs for food and is given it. Just then a knock on the door is heard, and he asks the good woman to hide him. She does so, thereby sending his captors on the wrong trail. A few minutes after they have gone another knock is heard. She hides him again. This time it is the marshal demanding $500, being a chattel mortgage which he holds upon her goods. She is unable to pay it, so he leaves, threatening to foreclose the mortgage.
