" A Sad Time For Mary Pickford "

Author: PamelaShort from Canada
29 December 2013

*** This review may contain spoilers ***

After leaving the Independent Moving Picture Company, Mary Pickford secured a contract with the new Majestic Motion Picture Company. She convinced founder Harry Aitken to also take her sister Lottie and brother Jack along with employing her husband Owen Moore with the condition he would act and direct films. She had hoped this would help her very shaky marriage with Moore, but it did not survive and her new situation with Majestic would last for only five films. Out of the five films only one now survives, Little Red Riding Hood. Honor Thy Father was the last of the five films and it was released in February 1912, more than a month after Pickford walked away from Majestic and Owen Moore. It was a single reel story of the challenges facing a young girl as she struggles without a mother and with an alcoholic father. Sadly it echoed the young actresses own struggles with a marriage damaged beyond repair by an alcoholic Owen Moore. Luckily for Mary Pickford she was able to rejoin the Biograph Company and together with D. W Griffith she would make some of the best short films of her career during 1912. For fans of silent films and Mary Pickford the loss of her work during this period is a tragic one.
