The Coming of Age of Hou Hsiao-hsien
29 June 2015 | by (.) – See all my reviews

It's rare to see a film that so explicitly contains its own statement of intent, from the scene where main characters sneak into a movie-theatre where they happen to be playing Rocco and His Brothers, that great Italian film about being an immigrant in your own country, to later, when the boys from rural Fengkuei themselves move to the big city, and they're tricked into paying to see a porn-movie, supposedly playing on the top floor of an abandoned building. When they get there, all they see is a large, glassless window overlooking the city, framed by Hou to resemble a movie-screen. With both scenes, Hou, who cut his teeth making popular romantic comedies, is clearly affirming his commitment to a new realism, to making films that are also like life.

The Boys From Fengkuei represents both a clean break and an artistic quantum leap. While the story of teenage boys hanging out, getting into trouble, having amorous awakenings could be that of any coming-of-age movie, it's Hou's acute sense of people, time and place that lifts it up into greatness and transports you into their lives.

It's Hou's fourth feature film, but the one where he has finally found his voice, it's also his first great film.
