Storyline

"Cholly" wishes to call on his best girl and sends her a large bouquet. To find out if the girl really loves him, he sends a note with the messenger boy requesting her to "wear this" if she does. The boy delivers the note and a package which the young lady opens and finds an old pair of trousers and other masculine wearing apparel. She becomes enraged. When "Cholly" comes she proceeds to give him instructions as to what to do in the future, etc., but before she finishes, the boy, having discovered his mistake, returns with the right box. "Cholly" hastily closes up the wrong one, hands it to the boy and kicks him out of the door. He then opens the right box and presents the bouquet himself. She wears the flowers, and things are now all right. Written by Edison Catalog

Messenger Boy's Mistake, The (1903)

** 1/2 (out of 4)

Decent Edison comedy has a woman receiving a message from her boyfriend telling her to wear a certain item that he has sent her. The message boy mixes up the package and the woman is shocked when she looks and sees what item her boyfriend "sent" her. At just over 90-seconds this is a decent little film that manages to get one good laugh. Of course, the entire film is just a build-up to the final moments when her boyfriend arrives and realizes what has happened. I'm sure many viewers of today will look at this and not see too much but I think film buffs will enjoy the type of humor on display. The funniest thing is that there's a sequence where the message is shown to the viewer so that they can read it. It's a very small message but they keep up on screen for so long that you could probably read it five or six times. I'm not sure if people were slow readers back in 1903 but the majority of the running time happens here.
