Gary is in his early 20's, but is developmentally disabled and has the mind of a thirteen year-old. He knew the girl quite well and was attracted to her, but his shyness and disability made him feel inadequate. Judge Deed feels the prosecution has a weak case and fumes when he learns that they have withheld evidence from the defence. On another front, Deed decides to investigate rumours that a fellow judge may be corrupt. He enlists his daughter Charlie to undertake some research but he is breaching etiquette by engaging in this type activity and is inviting the wrath of the Lord Chancellors Department and his fellow judges.
- Jason Shepherd awakens in hospital in an amnesiac state. Discovering that he is a police detective he tries to solve the mystery of how he came to lose his memory and uncovers some shocking truths.
- Taggart is promoted to Acting Superintendent so when two young girls are murdered and the wife of a leading suspect also, he starts to wonder if Jardine and Reid are up to the job.
- Three siblings - Ed, Darina and Wilfred Hay - are charged with hiring someone to murder their abusive father. Appearing before Judge Deed, Ed Hay, a solicitor, acts for himself and his brother and sister in spite of the Judge's recommendation that they seek counsel. In his personal life, Deed renews his relationship with Francesca Rochester, who has now left her husband. She seeks Deed's assistance in having an elderly aunt declared mentally unfit which would allow Francesca to save the publishing business. At the news that Deed is again seeing his wife, Sir Ian Rochester re-doubles his efforts to discredit him and remove him from the bench. Deed's daughter Charlie informs him that she is pregnant and wants a termination, something Deed is dead set against.
- Tensions flare when a pregnant inmate miscarries and almost dies in her cell. Young inmate Rachel is moved to her own cell when she is bullied by Shell & Denny.
- Jack starts an affair with his cousin's ex-fiancée Gemma just as he begins an investigation into a prostitution ring led by Dubliner James Kerrigan who has managed to lure local teenager Mairead O'Sullivan into the ring also. An out of control Brian attacks Gemma prompting Jack to hit Brian but his attack gives Dennis Costello the ammunition he has been looking for in trying to get rid of Jack. Elsewhere, a broke Finbarr applies for a loan to the bank.
- Jack is suspended by Inspector O'Kane pending his investigation into the assault charges on his cousin Brian. Dennis puts the thumbscrews into Finbarr now that he is acting Sergeant but is Finbarr finally getting wise to Dennis's tricks. Meanwhile, Mairead O'Sullivan overdoses after she refuses to give her statement to anyone but Jack. At the hospital James Kerrigan takes advantage of Mairead and brings her back to his house and forces her to resume her prostitution role. Although suspended he works with Mairead's dad to get Mairead back.
- Jack continues to find the person he believes torched Dennis Costello's abandoned house but finds himself thwarted every which way by both Costello and his former boss Jim Dooley. But is Jack looking in the right direction? Meanwhile, Gemma breaks up with Brian and he takes revenge by attacking Jack and then changing the locks on Eithne's home barring her entry.
- Jack investigates the suspicious fire of an unfinished house which belonged to his friend Killian Kinsella. Killian informs him that he sold the house to Dennis Costello some weeks previously. Shortly afterwards the body of Killian's sister-in-law Niamh Duffy is found dead in the burnt out house. Jack suspects that Dennis had a hand in the fire and sets out to prove what happened. Meanwhile, Jack kisses his cousin's girlfriend Gemma and also finds out that Finbarr slipped plans for Dennis's nightclub past him and he is far from pleased. Elsewhere, Dennis calls in Jack's old boss to help him deflect evidence of the fire away from him.
- Nikki prepares for her appeal alone when Helen decides to resign from Larkhall. Crystal shares some news. Yvonne and Virginia agree to turn the tables on Fenner.
- Jack continues his investigation into the death of Seamus Devlin and discovers a link between him and his newly found Uncle Sean going back to his uncle's days in St. Augusta's Industrial School. Meanwhile, Dennis Costello plans a major redevelopment of his pub which won't please Jack. Elsewhere, Brian considers staying on and renting after Dennis tells him that his father inherited land in the area which is now his.
- The body of elderly recluse Seamus Devlin is discovered dead in a field and the initial charge is to Ruairi, a troubled teenager, who is staying at a remote youth facility. Jack is forced to keep watch on him as he gathers evidence on the death. Meanwhile, a long-lost cousin Brian and his girlfriend Gemma opens up new wounds for Jack's mother and the discovery of an uncle Jack never knew existed - a victim of the now derelict and violent industrial school for young offenders.

- Zelda, a young woman whose husband is lost at sea, and her 12-year-old daughter, Perdita, live off the coast of Scotland on the small island of Skua. The islanders believe Zelda is a witch, but her sister, Annie, says Zelda is just "different." Certain that her husband will never return, Zelda drowns herself. When lobsters, the islanders' main source of trade, suddenly disappear, the people decide that Zelda has put a curse on the sea for taking her husband's life. As a result, the orphaned Perdita is banned from school, taunted by other children, and branded by the community as "the witch's daughter."
- Wayland returns home after being in the war in Afghanistan. He returns home not only injured and suffering seizures but also to find the family he left behind has disintegrated in his absence: his wife has become an alcoholic and his daughter has left home and then vanished without a trace. To make matters worse he suffers terrifying flashbacks of his time in Afghanistan. His quest becomes not only about finding her but also about discovering who and what he has become. Wayland is looking for something he left behind in the killing fields of Helmand Province - his humanity and his soul.

Alex is called away and her place taken by the young Oxbridge graduate Hall, of whom Tony is initially suspicious, but he turns out to have a psychology degree and to be a big fan of Tony's work. A more sinister fan, clearly Bryant, is leaving 'presents' on Tony's door-step.
- At one of Cambridge's most prestigious colleges, a man is murdered and a valuable painting is stolen, leaving Geordie to determine if the two crimes are linked.
- Tony is allowed to assist in the investigations. He sees the murders as ritualistic as 'Power Not Truth' was written in the dead doctors' blood. He also begins to see a connection with the murders of the prostitutes and, against Alex's advice, offers himself as bait to trap the killer.
- When a female area mental health commissioner is murdered, with Bryant the culprit, Tony is given police protection, and sergeant Kevin Jeffries moves in with him. At the same time, he is trying to unravel the mystery of the murdered homeless men, and discovers that not all of them are what they first appear to be. His work and life, however, will inevitably be interrupted by Bryant, leading to their final show-down.
- Ten years earlier the charred corpse of young poet Sean Doherty was found in the scrapyard of Turkish drug-dealer Mehtin Topal, though Topal was not convicted of the killing. Unlike cynical Gerry, Brian is taken by the world of poetry but Sean's brother-in-law Eoin also claims that Sean had gangster connections. CCTV provides an unexpected clue to the solution of the case, fuelled by Brian's poetical observations and leading to a surprising discovery.

Chris, a new young constable whose attitude Alex dislikes, then disappears and is abducted by the murderer who strips him and strings him up. Tony realizes that the killer is the sort of person that anybody would trust - such as a doctor - as he races to save Chris's life.
