- For many French people, Christian Ranucci is the symbol of one of the most awful justice failure ever known. For others, he was a criminal who received the punishment he deserved. 27 years after Le pull-over rouge (1979), "Une mère", which simply means "A mother", shows the fight of Mrs Héloïse Mathon to prove her son Christian Ranucci was indeed innocent of the crime he was condemned and executed for. Christian Ranucci, 20, was arrested for the murder of Marie-Dolorès Rambla, an eight-year-old girl in June 1974. Though it remained many questions about his guilt, he was sentenced to death on March 10th, 1976 and guillotined in Marseilles on July 28th, 1976 at 04:13 a.m. . After his death, only two other men were executed in France: a severely retarded person unable to argument nor defend himself and a paranoid foreigner.

The characters are tough too. They don't give up.

Kevin gratefully accepts to bunk with Laurie in family's grand home where they pretend to be lawyers, but when she expects kinky sex the hunk confides he's gay. The victims prove not just that.

- Kevin and Lyes get dumped with an apparently absurd case, a skull so old it has to fall under the statute of limitation. They still prove themselves gifted and devoted detectives. Their observations also help in a shop-robbery case which turns out to involve Alex's ex and the weapon used to shoot his buddy in a wheelchair, causing major loyalty conflicts.

Moreno breaks the rules almost openly to free them 'avvidentally'. Commissioner Santamaria's adulterous affair with Nadia Poulain further burdens her marriage which only survives for kid Brandon's sake. Laura suspects pa Santamaria shot her ma's lover, revolutionary bank robber Kaplan, and hopes to prove it by seducing archivist Frederic.
- While they stake-out Indian shopkeepers' extortion for 'protection money', Kévin is first and captain Duval last to notice their foxy host Eva Keller, who keeps changing seductively in her street-side bedroom, is a transsexual. Emmanuel Gautier hints his wife, on nerves medication, may have 'accidentally' killed their baby Nathan, she he wanted to get rid of her without losing her money. While his own mother give birth early, Alex Moreno makes friends with Alex's healthy teenage brother Maxime and suspects an alternative Nathan tragedy. Viviane suggests her ex Santamaria can't be Laura's dad, claiming he's infertile.

They discover Oxhana's twin sister Katya was a 'client' of white slaver Protoenko, and her corps in his hotel room.

Industrialist Merquin receives environmentalist threats, so Lauro must escort his teen daughter Daphné.
- Bordeaux-based enologist (wine expert) Benjamin Lebel interrupts work on his next original wine publication, assisted by haughty relative and eager Virgile, to identify a Grand Cru château from Pomerol for police detective Barbaroux. It's used as signature in a ritual, filling one glass more each time, at a serial killer's successive murder scenes and a wartime tomb. Although told by the rude inspector to butt out, Lebel, who also receives anonymous, old pictures of the victims, works out they all had something to do with World War II, which the château vintage dates from too, and possibly with Vichy collaboration.
- While on the run from the authorities, Antoine and his new friend Claude end up hiding out at a barn where they meet another draft dodger. At the school, Lucienne is becoming suspicious of the new singing teacher, Marguerite.

- Antoine agrees to help Marie free the captive Resistance members with a desperate and daring plan. Antoine must convince Raymond to help them.
- Marcel and Daniel are reunited in a prison cell after Daniel was arrested by the French Militia. Hortense looks after Gustave at Daniel's home when a surprise visitor comes knocking.
- Following the parade, townspeople are rounded up. Müller and Chassagne compete to get Antoine first. Marcel is marked for execution. Marchetti interrogates Lucienne and Marguerite. Suzanne attempts to free Marcel but the price is too high. Chassagne is arrested.
- Antoine decides to hold an 11 November remembrance parade in Villeneuve as a gesture of defiance. The Germans are lured out of the town by a diversion and the police are temporarily neutralized by the Resistance. Lucienne and Marguerite sabotage the radio communications at the school.
- Marguerite is pressured into betrayal. Marcel and Chassagne become acquainted. Servier's wife gives him a lesson in politics. Beriot gets a warning and is tasked with taking care of Marguerite. Marcel and Chassagne are executed. Antoine and most of the group evade capture.

- Marcel, battered after repeated interrogation and torture, wakes up in a cell with Marie's son Raoul; Antoine's group, under Claude's direction and insistence, practice theater in order to distract themselves from boredom.
