It seems that her husband was abusive to Booth and Booth would be become homicidal. What he really wanted was to take over Gus' life, but unfortunately he is dying, so he decides to let Gus live his life -- that of a criminal being hunted by the law. No one believes Gus' story especially agent Carter. So Gus' only hope is to try and prove that Booth exists or get him before he dies.
