Lady Persie tells Hallam that she is pregnant, but all these events are over-shadowed by the German invasion of Czechoslovakia, making war a far more realistic possibility than before.

However, the organizer is more taken by young Johnny's fighting skills, and the boy progresses to the amateur welterweight finals, but walks out after the promoter makes a pass at him. Harry takes his place and wins the title and the admiration of Beryl. Hallam brawls with Landry, who has come to watch the fight, and forbids his wife from seeing him. He is, however, more than happy to share a long kiss with her sister.

They get as far as the Bulgarian-Turkish border but they have been set up and border police find fissionable material in their car. Paul is arrested and Becca refuses to go on without him. Martin meanwhile has taken Michael and Oksana to his opulent villa on the Bosphorous telling them they have to wait for their passports. Oksana knows something is wrong as she's recognized one of her kidnappers. Martin makes it very clear what will happen if she lets on that anything is amiss.
