- William McClure is the villlage doctor in a remote Scottish glen. Tricked into buying Lassie, a collie afraid of water, he sets about teaching her to swim. At the same time he has the bigger problem that he is getting older and must ensure the glen will have a new local doctor ready.
- Great Britain a few years after World War 2. A writer is asked by the government to write a youth story to boost the morale of the youth after the difficult war years. At first he is a bit hesitant, but when the characters appear one by one, the story grows before his and our eyes. The boys set off, accompanied by an older man with a horse and trailer. What they don't know is that the man, posing as a market vendor, is actually out to expose a criminal. A charming youth film with little ambition, which also casually shows us the London of that time, both what survived and what was destroyed by the war.

Mr. Inquisitive gets many of these stories from random telephone calls he makes. Most of those people he happens to call are performing artists, who not only tell Mr. Inquisitive what they would like to do, but show him through their performances. The Auntie Pru's Recipe column, which is adjacent to Mr. Inquisitive's and which is written by Mr. Inquisitive's exasperated and sleepless male colleague, gets Mr. Inquisitive into a few scrapes along the way.

Many ranchers are being forced to sell their land, and crooked state treasure Marvin Fletcher buys up the land at pennies on the dollar. However, Laguna del Sol Ranch owner Taisie Lockhart and her ranch hands are holding out. Cowboy Dan McMasters returns to the ranch and tries to rekindle his romance with Taisie, but she rejects him because he fought for the North during the war. But what she doesn't know is that Dan is on an undercover mission from the President to investigate Fletcher, and to do that he must pretend to be sympathetic to Fletcher and goes to work for him, angering Taisie even more. Complications ensue.
- Andress, Watson, and Johnson are with a Royal Air Force squadron in France. When Watson is killed in combat, Andrews tries to return the letters Watson received from a girl called "Pom-Pom." There are two possibilities: one is Watson's widow; the other is a German spy.

- August Bolte, the richest man in a settlement in German East Africa in the period before World War I, is called "Mamba" by the locals, which is the name of a deadly snake. Despised by the locals and the European settlers alike for his greed and arrogance, Bolte forces the beautiful daughter of a destitute nobleman to marry him in exchange for saving her father from ruin. Upon her arrival in Africa, she falls in love with an officer in the local German garrison. When World War I breaks out, Bolte, unable to avoid being conscripted, foments a rebellion among the local natives.
- When M. Beaucaire, a handsome barber, catches the Duke of Winterset cheating at gambling, Beaucaire exacts Winterset's cooperation in sneaking Beaucaire into a great ball, disguised as the Duke de Chartres, and to introduce him to the beautiful Lady Mary. The disguised barber successfully pulls off the masquerade and is soon the toast of society. But Winterset is embittered at having been blackmailed so, and he sets out to destroy Beaucaire if he can do so without revealing his own duplicity.
- Princess Mary of Burgundy, traveling in disguise using the name of Yolanda, attends a silk fair and falls in love with Maximilian, who has disguised himself as a knight. Later Maximilian is framed and imprisoned by conspirators, but is saved by Mary. She and Maximilian plan to wed, but when the Swiss threaten Mary's father, the duke, with war if the marriage occurs, he arranges a marriage for her with the mentally unstable Dauphin of France. Maximilian determines to rescue her from marriage with the dauphin--even if it means war with the Swiss.
