- Telly introduces another episode of "Shape Up with Slimey," an exercise program. Slimey leads the kids in various exercises, until Oscar tells them to keep down the noise. Muppets- "The Ten Commandments of Health". Joe Raposo asks the musical question, "Which Comes First, the Chicken or the Egg?"
- Big Bird is reading his "Western Tales" book and thinks it might be fun to have lived life as a cowboy. He begins to imagine what it would be like living in the Old West - In Big Bird's imagination, Sesame Street is rendered as an old west town named "Sesame Gulch." Big Bird makes himself into a bad hombre named "Bad Bird," fastest wing in the West. Two miners (played by Willy and writer Joseph A. Bailey) flee in terror as he moseys over to "Hooper's Canteena."
- Stevie Wonder sings "123 Sesame Street." Cartoon: Before and after: Several kids are sad, but become happy when a fruit vendor appears. Muppets- Ernie and Bert - Ernie wants to have some cookies. Bert asks Ernie if he knows what "before" means, and Ernie demonstrates by saying that before he can have a cookie, he has to open the lid to a cookie jar, and after he closes the lid, he eats the cookie. He demonstrates a few times, until he loses his appetite for dinner.
- Telly has been instructed by Oscar, as a part of his Grouchketeer duty, to learn the word printed on his sign - "NO." Telly doesn't know what the word means and becomes frustrated by Maria, Olivia and Bob's responses (thinking they're telling him "No" in response to his question). When Oscar asks if he's learned the word yet, Telly sadly admits, "No." Oscar gives him his approval, leaving Telly befuddled.
- At Hooper's Store, David tells Luis and Maria that he wants to hear Spanish spoken all day today so he can learn the language. He gets confused when they disagree about the Spanish words for blanket and orange, since they both come from different Spanish-speaking regions. Ernie is painting a portrait of Bert, but paints Bert with curly hair, glasses and a beard. When Bert gets angry about this, Ernie takes him behind the easel and puts curly hair, glasses and a beard on Bert.
- Big Bird approaches Luis who is working on a cuckoo clock on the bench in front of the Fix-It Shop. Luis is having trouble fixing it, so Big Bird suggests keeping it warm and giving it lots of juice until it gets better. Luis tries to explain that it's a mechanical cuckoo, but when the clock strikes the hour, the bird emerges and sneezes. Two alpine climbers hike up a letter Z and stake a claim on it. Z for zipper.
- Big Bird uses Susan's old eye chart to test Snuffy's eyesight, but Snuffy gets all the letters wrong. Big Bird says his mother should know how terrible his eyesight is. Snuffy insists his eyesight is just fine - he helps his mommy thread needles all the time - it's just that he can't read. Jazz Alphabet: male vocalists shout each letter. some later scripts[1] cite this segment in the episode as "Madrigal Alphabet". An old woman emerges from the pouch of a bouncing kangaroo. She proclaims, "K. Kangaroo!"
- 1969– 55mTV-YTV EpisodeErnie and Bert - Ernie can't sleep, so Bert tells him to count sheep. Ernie tries to count sheep, but it's dull -- so he starts counting fire engines. The noise from the imaginary fire engine wakes Bert up. Bert says that Ernie's waking up the whole neighborhood, and tells him to count something quieter. Ernie counts balloons -- but the balloon gets bigger and bigger, finally bursting with a huge explosion that wakes Bert up again.
- Maria and Mr. Hooper watch as Barkley follows Cody everywhere. They wonder why until Barkley scarfs up a piece of food Cody has dropped. Muppets- Sesame Street News Flash Kermit explores the lab of Professor Nucleus Von Fission, who has just built a robot called the Six Dollar Man, out of parts which cost him six dollars total. The robot destroys the lab, while Von Fission laughs. Kermit is horrified, but Von Fission explains, "What do you expect for six dollars?" Lazy Wanda's knees converse with each other. - Big Bird has just delievered the punchline to a joke for Maria (who isn't laughing) when Linda enters the Fix-It Shop with a TV that gets picture but no sound. Big Bird wonders why that would matter for Linda since she's deaf, so Linda explains that it's out of consideration for any guests she may have over. Maria tweaks the TV and turns it on; it's now getting sound, but the vocalist (Marilyn Sokol) sounds awful. Sesame Street News Flash: Prince Charming kisses Sleeping Beauty, intending to wake her up. To his astonishment, she turns into a frog and hops off with Kermit. A male frog hops around and bulges his throat.
- The letter R joins U and N to make the word RUN. Anything Muppets run into the scene and take the letters. Cartoon- A man invites an M to dinner. The M is very appreciative, and makes "Mmmmmm" sounds. It eats all of the food at the table, and winds up eating the screen. Artists: The Hubleys. Film- The celebration of Chinese New Year.
- Maria works in the Fix-it Shop, trying to fix a staticky radio. While she goes to look for a new tube, a Martian materializes, sees the radio, and guesses that it's either a cat, a chicken, or a doggy. He pets the radio, then listens to a mattress commercial and becomes sleepy. He falls asleep on the counter as a program of organ music plays, when Maria comes back and finds the radio working. A housewife screams because there is a mouse in her house. Her husband's solution is to continually bring in animals to chase it out, with each animal making an even bigger mess than the previous one.
- David has to leave Hooper's Store due to a family emergency- and the only one free to watch the store while he's gone is Cookie Monster. Cookie gives his word not to touch a bite of the cookies in the store- but makes no promise not to eat anything else.
- Big Bird lures Maria to his nest to show her the snowman he's built. Maria says that it's upside down and that he should have looked at a picture of a snowman to see what one looks like. Big Bird produces a book called "World's Great Snowmen" and says it looks just alike a picture in the book - which Maria notes is upside down. She offers to help fix it, placing the head on the top, etc. Big Bird says he liked it better his first way, and Maria assures him that's fine: he's invented a new way to build a snowman. What Do You Do With a Pet?
- Big Bird finds out that everybody on the New Mexico ranch gets up early because they have work to do. He tries out the chicken feed that a woman is throwing to the chickens, and says it's pretty good. Big Bird wanders around, and finds Gordon and some kids feeding alfalfa to a bunny. He then walks over to Maria and Roberta, and they show him how they make adobe bricks. Then he passes by Bob building a window. Oscar is tending to his morning chores, too -- helping Señor Romo feed slops to the pigs. Capital I, he's quite a guy. Old West: A cowboy who needs a dentist comes to see Adam T. Glaser, who is such a jack-of-all-trades that he forgets what a dentist does.
- Cookie Monster asks Mr. Hooper what a number two is good for. Is it used as a bat, or an instrument, or a puzzle piece, or something to write with? No, it's for counting two of something. But according to Cookie Monster, it's also good to eat. A cartoon man climbs a live-action boy. Ernie and Bert - Ernie thinks that he isn't special. Bert tells Ernie to feel his nose -- "That's an Ernie nose!" -- and then feel his hair, and wiggle his fingers. Bert says that nobody else is just like Ernie. Encouraged, Ernie tells the audience to do the same. Speech Balloon: A for Ape. Do Ya Have an A on Ya?
- David gets angry when he's almost hit by a stack of newspapers thrown at his feet by a newspaper deliveryman. The driver of the newspaper truck apologizes to David. The Story of the Crow and the Pitcher. Roosevelt Franklin Elementary School: The students recite poems about things they had to practice at. Two groups of mountain goats try to pass each other on a mountain road.
- Mr. Macintosh wheels his cart on the block and sings "A Singy Kind of Song." Cartoon- A boy imagines multiple uses for his broom. Muppets- Farley explains things one can do with their mind - he plans on going to the door, he imagines who's knocking at it, he remembers it's not his mother and he hopes there's not a scary monster at the door. Herry Monster surprises him by bursting through the door, frightening Farley away. Herry's sorry Farley ran away; he wanted to play.
- Bob points out to the viewer that it has recently snowed on Sesame Street. Oscar likes the way the snow looks on top of some of his tin cans, but he likes the snow even better when he mixes it in a bucket with mud, chimney soot, and other garbage, causing Bob to want to throw it into the gutter. After he does so, a truck drives by and splashes Bob with the mess he (and Oscar) made.
- Mr. Hooper is having trouble with a geometry problem for his night school homework. Bob offers a solution he thinks will work. Gordon comes in and demonstrates the way he thinks will work instead. Mr. Hooper resolves to solve the problem both ways, then compare with the answer in the back of the book. A kitten is knittin' a kerchief, a kite, and a polka-dot mitten.
- David and Grandma Grace are surprised to hear samba music coming from Oscar's trash can. Oscar and Grundgetta are practicing for a dance competition, so Grace suggests she and David cut a rug to demonstrate. The Grouches like their rusty moves at first, but boo when they get into the swing of things.
- Gordon and Bob are about to take the kids to the day care center, when they see it's about to rain. Oscar pulls up in his Sloppy Jalopy and offers them all a ride to avoid getting wet. He has the kids pile in the backseat while Gordon and Bob pull up the taxi's roof, which only goes far enough to cover the backseat. Oscar starts the car, which causes the roof to fall back down. They sense it will be a pattern, then the only option they have - the kids sit under the roof as Bob and Gordon push the car.
- The adults discuss some transportation, as Big Bird tries to guess what they're talking about. He thinks they're discussing a noisy, underground worm, but it's actually the subway. He asks if he can join them on the train, as he needs to visit his friend Petula Pigeon downtown. They all head out, with Big Bird commenting that he hopes they avoid that large, noisy worm.
- Olivia talks to Big Bird and the kids about remembering and asks them about some things they can remember. Big Bird thinks they're easy questions, but he fumbles when Olivia asks him what his address is. Henson Films: Number Twelve Rocks Bip Bippadotta and friends show none, some and all.
- Bob narrates as a Honker tries to talk to Darlene, who is deaf. Bob's voiceover, plus some help from Linda, help the Honker understand the situation and help introduce the two. Darlene is unable to understand the Honker, which proves to be the same for everyone.
- Big Bird mopes on the stoop with nothing to do, so Maria encourages him to play using his imagination. Joined by Barkley, Big Bird imagines riding his horse, Shane, and encounters desert winds, a rattlesnake, a thunder storm and wolves. They seek shelter in a cave (the stoop), where Maria encounters them and asks why Big Bird hasn't tried playing anything yet. Cartoon- An anthropomorphic cloud blows a wild wind disturbing some farm animals.
- Everyone is setting up for a festival in the town square today. Big Bird offers his services to Luis, who is installing some speakers. Luis suggests Big Bird keep others away while they set up the event. Big Bird calls out loudly for people to steer clear, but because he can't speak the language, he winds up attracting a crowd instead. In rhyme, a man points out animals who stole and/or ruined his clothing.
- Maria comes outside on a very cold day. Oscar enjoys cold weather like this because it means everyone stays inside and he can be left alone. Car / Film- A Scanimate/live-action hybrid segment in which an off-camera child and Luis name words that begin with H. Muppets- The Amazing Mumford waves his magic wand over a transparent glass cookie jar and makes the jar become full of cookies and then empty (over and over) as an anxious Cookie Monster watches. Maria comes outside on a very cold day. Oscar enjoys cold weather like this because it means everyone stays inside and he can be left alone.A gazelle runs fast across a plain. Music: Joe Raposo. Cartoon Jazz #8. Muppets- A greaser sings about his relationship that was almost ruined by a "One Way" sign.
- Big Bird sees the adults all moving various items into the garage. He asks questions about what's going on and learns they're having a garage sale today to raise money to plant new trees in the neighborhood. Big Bird goes off to get some items he could sell as well. Film- Paper-cut triangles fade into live-action shots of triangle-shaped things.
- Today is Granny Bird's birthday and Big Bird has a gift for her. He asks Gordon to help wrap it, until it's revealed the gift is a live goldfish. Gordon tells Big Bird he can't put this in the mail, so Big Bird gives him the fish as a birthday gift and dashes off to find something else for Granny Bird.
- As twilight begins, Telly greets the viewer and tells them what he overheard Mr. Hooper saying over the phone in Hooper's Store - something is coming to Sesame Street, only Telly doesn't know what that something is. As it begins to get darker, he becomes frightened of what it might be, until Olivia clues him in - nighttime is coming.
- When the telephone outside Hooper's Store rings, Bob answers it. To his shock, the voice is not another person, but the telephone itself. Bob tells David about the mysterious phone call, but David is skeptical. Bob now thinks it's a prank by Oscar the Grouch, but when confronted, Oscar denies any involvement with the talking telephone, stating that he and Bruno had been at the junkyard all day. Bob does not believe him until the phone rings again.
- Big Bird and Mr. Snuffleupagus act out the story of "The Three Little Pigs," where Snuffy plays the Big Bad Wolf. He huffs and puffs and causes a huge mess of Big Bird's nest. Big Bird suggests they play jacks instead. Cartoon G For Giggle (voice of Allen Swift). Ernie and Bert - Ernie makes a mess of the apartment in order to find a note he wrote to Bert. "I Can Remember": A little girl remembers what to buy at the store (A loaf of bread, a container of milk, and a stick of butter) by visualizing her mother giving the instructions. Artist: Jim Simon.
- On a chilly and windy day on Sesame Street, Telly worries that the wind will be strong enough to blow him away to a strange place he's never been to. Maria assures him this wouldn't happen, but holds onto his hand anyhow. Cartoon- "Four Seasons".
- Luis and Olivia greet the viewer on a very hot day on Sesame Street. Olivia comments that it's so hot, one could fry an egg on the sidewalk; Oscar does just that. I Thought a Thought - about small things. A man thinks about small things, and lists them. A sea monster thinks it is small, especially when compared to its father. Artist: Cliff Roberts.
- David comes into Hooper's Store and finds some broken eggshells sitting on the counter. He wonders who could've left them behind, when Sherlock Hemlock arrives to solve the mystery. David finds more clues - a used bus ticket and a baby photo of himself. While Sherlock believes this is the doing of a traveling chicken, David realizes that his grandmother Grace has come for a visit.
- Maria has made a birdhouse for a friend of hers from the country, who is coming to visit Sesame Street today. Biff and Sully enter the Fix-It Shop, where Biff assumes the birdhouse is instead a boat and a racecar. "I'm six years old today!"
- Grover asks The Amazing Mumford if he could make his carrot disappear, provided that some smoke appears. Mumford performs the trick and Grover is impressed by the puff of smoke, however he fails to notice Mumford chomping on his carrot. When Grover asks Mumford to make the carrot reappear, he replies that he can't because he ate it ("You didn't say anything about magic!"). Cartoon- A disobedient jacket illustrating words that begin with the letter J annoys an off-screen narrator, which reveals two kids named Jenny and Jeff inside of it.
- Flex tries his best to make things work with Tonya (guest star Tamala Jones), but that becomes more difficult when he learns Danielle's true feelings for him. Meanwhile, Breanna's obsession with being crowned "cutest couple" with Arnaz for her school yearbook causes a rift between them.
- Big Bird introduces "Action Alphabet Time" on Sesame Street. Linda pushes in a giant letter J, then acts out various J words for the others to imitate (jumping, juggling and jogging). Mr. Hooper brings the tired participants some juice. A little man misplaces his J under his hat.
- Big Bird learns about medical shots as Susan and Dr. Sanchez (Gonzalo Madurga) administer them to the kids of the neighborhood. Billy Jo Jive: The doctor asks Billy and Sunset to get Bad News Barton to his office. They eventually bring Bad News Barton to the office, but the whole thing had been a set-up to get Billy Jo Jive to come to the doctor to get a shot.
- Pete Seeger, Bob, Maria, David and Big Bird sing "Put Your Finger in the Air." Ernie and Bert; Bert asks Ernie to share a banana with him. Ernie gets the inside of the banana, and gives Bert the peel. Cartoon: La palabra cerrado. A group of Hispanic children pick members for their baseball team. A new kid, Ramon, joins them. Violet climbs a vine with V words. The Villain in the Panama Hat (V).
- Bob meets Linda's dog, Snoopy, who understands sign language commands very well. "This dog puts me to shame," Bob remarks. Cartoon A rooster finds a purpose in his life when he's given the job to wake everyone on a farm. Artist: Bruce Cayard. Kids count 18 backflips. Herbert Birdsfoot invents a complicated machine, to test Cookie Monster's problem-solving abilities. Cookie Monster needs to pull the string to raise the glass cover off the plateful of cookies at the other end -- but when he lets go to retrieve the cookies, the cover will fall again. Herbert hears Cookie Monster approaching, and hides to observe him. Cookie investigates the machine for a moment, then gets the cookies by karate-chopping the glass cover.
- Oscar explains to Luis that he hates his alarm clock, because it wakes him up when he wants to sleep. On the other hand, he loves it, because when it wakes him up in the morning he won't sleep late and feel relaxed and rested. Scanimate Films #10. Lemurs rest on tree branches. Music: Joe Raposo. "The Story of A": A witch tells bored kids a story about the letter A involving an ant's apple getting stolen by an archer. Ernie approaches Bert in a harried manner, talking rapidly. Bert tells him to talk slower so he can understand him. Ernie says, slowly, that Bert's bread is burning in the oven, which causes Bert to speak in the same rapid, harried manner.
- Bert complains when a big letter H appears on the TV screen, so Ernie turns off the set, unplugs it, and takes a bunch of H objects out of the TV (including a hat, a house and a hamster). When he plugs it back in, a big letter I appears on the screen. Ernie wants to try fixing the TV again, but Bert tells him not to -- this is a great show.
- Maria introduces Big Bird to a telescope, which amazes him. He aims it toward the park and can spot Mr. Snuffleupagus lying down for a nap. Maria peers through and thinks he's merely a pile of sand (since his face is hidden). Cartoon- Superman demonstrates the letter S and some of the words it stands for. Sesame Street News Flash: Kermit interviews Ali Baba, who can't seem to figure out the magic word starting with the letter S to open the door to the cave. When Kermit says goodbye to the viewers, he accidentally blurts out "open Sesame (Street News)," to which the rock opens and forty thieves come out, stealing Kermit's watch and all his clothes.
- Still determined to find Mount Snuffleupagus, Big Bird and Snuffy take some kids along on their journey. They spot "Mount Sleeping Giant", which looks like a giant man sleeping. A goose and gander visit the land of the G's. Artist: Jeff Hale. Kermit tests two blindfolded monsters and asks them which number they're feeling. Herry Monster minus his blindfold describes how he knew the number was a five and in the process breaks the five into pieces. Cookie Monster attempts to feel the number and Kermit tells him that he can't since its broken. Cookie Monster devours the pieces and tells Kermit it tastes like a five.
- Big Bird can't stand the mess his nest area is. Susan suggests he throw out items he no longer needs, but Big Bird has a reason for keeping everything. "Alphabet Imagination": A female voice quickly recites the alphabet followed by a male voice narrating each letter in a series of psychedelic vignettes.
- The entire cast calls out a word for each letter of the alphabet. Oscar has a zoo inside his trash can. Ernie and Bert - Bert refuses to share his cookie with Ernie, who tells Bert that if the cookie was his, he wouldn't mind sharing. Ernie takes the cookie, and asks Bert to ask him if he would share it. A boy imagines multiple uses for his broom.
- Luis, Maria, Jay and Oscar watch as The Amazing Mumford makes things go up and down without touching them: first a book, then a basketball, then Oscar's can. Three witches attempt their own individual spells, which don't work out to their liking. They decide to cooperate by bringing all of their ingredients together, thus making chicken soup.
