About this time in America a wealthy contractor dies and leaves his immense fortune to Victoria Alexandra Vickers, the only daughter of his brother. A search is made for the girl and she is finally located in the hop fields. She is placed under the care of a Mrs. Carrington, to become polished. After "Viccy" leaves, Grummett, with five hundred pounds given him by the girl, sets himself up in business and is soon prosperous. Mrs. Carrington's son asks "Viccy" to marry him, as he needs money to pay his debts, and the girl accepts him. She later sees Grummett, however, and after discovering that Carrington wants only her money she goes back to Grummett, and East returns to East.

However, begrudging the creditors so large a share in the money, they come up with an elaborate scheme which involves faking the indebted Aubrey's death in favour of the next heir named in the will, his cousin George Maitland. Unfortunately, Maitland turns out to have a wife to claim him, while their butler decides to get in on the act on his own behalf... not to mention the awkward fact that the real George is also on his way!

- While reading the paper, John Weller is amazed at the number of "ads" setting forth the virtues of wigs, false teeth, form developers and other female beautifiers, turns to his wife and declares in disgust, "This magazine must have a big circulation among old ladies who want to look like Cinderellas." She merely laughs, and soon afterwards, Weller falls asleep in his chair. He dreams that he finds an old man making love to his wife, angrily confronts the old fellow and is told, "Your wife was my sweetheart sixty years ago." John is stunned by the news, asks his wife if it is true and she admits she is "eighty-five years old." Deciding she must be one of those women who preserve their youthful appearance by artifice, he commands her to retire behind a screen and hand out all that is false about her. After receiving a wig, various "form plumpers," a full set of false teeth and pair of wooden legs, John angrily kicks over the screen and to his horror finds nothing left but a little heap of clothes. Sobbing the poor fellow calls up the undertaker who brings a tiny coffin and tenderly places the remains in it. Weller mournfully tells the undertaker, "She was false to me but I love her just the same." The gentleman in black nods gravely and goes out with the coffin. John wakes up weeping and finds his wife staring at him in astonishment. He is still bewildered and to make sure she is real makes her open her mouth, pulls her hair and looks into her eyes, then with a sigh of relief takes her in his arms and kisses her, convinced she is all there.

- When the wealthy society woman has her beautiful pearls stolen she hurries to the newspaper office to have a notice of reward printed immediately. The editor offers to make the first reporter who brings in the details of the robbery and recovers the pearls, an editor, Baby Peggy, as the boss' stenographer, hears this and decides to be the one. She procures some male attire and a false mustache. Leaving the office, she sees two of the regulars just going off in a flivver. She jumps in the rear seat, unnoticed and by punching first one and then the other leads them to believe that the other is getting too fresh. They have words and finally get out to settle the matter, fistically. Our heroine seizes the opportunity and drives away in the car while the men are fighting. She arrives at the home of the society woman and questions the butler. His actions convince her that she is on the right track and after being thrown out several times she reenters in a new phonograph cabinet being delivered. While in the cabinet she gets the goods on the butler and rushes with her story and the pearls to the office where she is made editor and has them all jumping at her command.

- Polly, the Smith's prize cook, decides to marry Johnny. The Smiths starts out with her Johnny's house where the wedding is to take place. Vernon, a traffic cop who has been jilted by Polly, gives Jimmy Smith a ticket for some offense every few blocks. Polly has a bottle of eggnog with her and proceeds to get considerably intoxicated, They lose their way and after many narrow escapes, reach Johnny's house. All of the guests have left and Johnny tells Polly the wedding is off. The Smiths start home, thankful that they still have their good cook, but a sudden bump precipitates her into the arms of Vernon, the cop, who is following them, and there She decides to stay.
