- Seven British construction workers escape Britain's ever-growing dole queues and travel to Germany to work on a site in Düsseldorf. Follow their trials and tribulations of working away from home and away from the women they left behind.
- The magnificent seven are forced to camp out in Thornley Manor. Wayne is given the cold shoulder by the other lads and is forced to start thinking seriously about how to regain his popularity.
- The lads take a step up in the world when they are asked to convert Thornley Manor into timeshare units. But their arrival in the village sets alarm bells ringing, especially for the local policeman.
- When work at the Manor is stopped because it is a listed building, the hapless brickies decide to go to the local village, where they are treated with suspicion.
- Plumber Harry Blackburn is mad about country and western music, and when he joins the boys Oz regales him with his tales of Nashville and Merle Haggard. The truth comes out about Dennis' debts and the lads all go on strike. Ally, annoyed to hear of this, sends in his toughest boys to sort them out. The eight builders of course, show them the road back to the North East.
- Work at Thornley Manor is over and the lads take a break before leaving for Spain. Oz uses the opportunity to visit home and hits on the barmy idea of kidnapping his son, determined to prevent him from being taken overseas by wife Marjorie - but makes the mistake of roping Wayne in to help.
