When a walker attacks Eugene, Abraham protects him and Eugene is upset with Abraham since he wanted to prove that he can protect himself. They have an argument and Abraham leaves Eugene alone. Denise decides to retrieve a cooler in a car with a walker and Daryl and Rosita have to return to save her, but she kills the walker by herself. Out of the blue, they are attacked by a group led by Dwight. He shows Eugene and tells that Daryl and his group must take them to their compound; otherwise he will kill them. What will the group do? Meanwhile Carol is in an existential crisis.

The camp's water line plugs up up and Carol has to go outside the fence and see if she can fix the problem. Tyreese is understandably upset and wants Rick to find whoever killed Karen and David. While Rick proposes a border between the two groups, the Governor requests that Rick delivers Michonne to him to avoid the war between them. Meanwhile, in the prison, Merle wants to attack and kill the Governor, but Glenn, Maggie and Michonne vanquish him. Rick and the Governor schedule an other meeting in two days, but the Governor's real intention is to betray Rick and kill him.

Rick tells Shane Lori is pregnant, and Shane confronts Lori, who tells him Rick is the baby's father. Carl tells Shane he wants to stay on the farm to search for Sophia. Glenn discloses to the survivors that the barn is full of walkers, and Shane decides to kill the zombies in the barn. He gives weapons to the survivors and releases the walkers from the barn. Then Shane, Andrea, Daryl, T-Dog, and Glenn shoot all the walkers in front of Hershel. After the butchery, the last walker leaves the barn.

Meanwhile, Abraham and the group headed to Washington are still trying to deal with Eugene's revelation. When a few of them head off to find water, they manage to forget what's happened, at least for a short time. At the church, Gabriel goes off on his own, without telling anyone or taking a weapon with him.

Andrea and Michonne see a helicopter crash and they head to the spot to seek out survivors to help them. However a group of armed men arrives together and they hide in the wood. The men take the pilot from the helicopter and the women are surprised by Merle. The group takes Andrea and Michonne to their community in Woodbury where the women are welcomed with food, medicine, hot shower and clothes. They are introduced to the Governor, a man that rules Woodbury, protecting and giving quality of life to the people in the community. Andrea believes that Woodbury is the perfect place in the chaos, but Michonne does not trust on the Governor and wants to leave the place. Meanwhike, the helicopter pilot tells the location of the National Guard convoy with his friends and the Governor promises to rescue them with his men. But when they arrive in the location, something happens.

Rick and Shane drive 18 miles out far from Hershel's farm to seek a safe place to leave the outsider Randall, who has recovered from the injury to his leg. Rick stops the car at a crossroad and has a serious conversation with Shane about Lori and Carl. When they reach a county prison, they leave Randall with his hands and legs tied and a knife. While pleading for his life, Randall says he knows Maggie. Shane decides to kill him. Rick and Shane fight, and at one point Shane throws a big wrench at Rick that misses him but breaks a window in the building. A swarm of walkers crawl out and attack the humans. They trap Shane in a school bus, and though Rick at first wants to leave him to be killed. he gets the car and goes back to save him. Back at the farm, Beth wants to commit suicide but she is dissuaded by Lori and Maggie. When Andrea offers to keep an eye on Beth, she leaves her alone to reach a decision.
Shane and Rick head out away from the farm figuring to abandon Randall in some remote location making it impossible to for him to find the farm again. Rick and Shane have it out over Lori and Rick makes it quite clear that she is his wife and that the unborn child is his as well. When Randall reveals that he went to school with Maggie, Rick and Shane realize he could find the location of the Greene farm. Rick wants to take 24 hours to review the situation and to assess whether Randall should be forced out. Not surprisingly, Shane suggests that the best solution would be to kill him. Back at the farm meanwhile, Lori and Maggie disagree with Andrea's tough love approach to Beth's desire to take her own life.

Rick organizes search teams to seek out Sophia. While he walks with Shane, his friend advises Rick to call off the search since Sophia is probably dead after three days missing in the woods, and the group is getting weaker and weaker. Hershel wants to keep his family apart of the survivors and asks Rick and his friends to keep distance from his group. Meanwhile Daryl's horse is startled by a snake and Daryl falls off a cliff and is wounded by an arrow. He dreams with his older brother Merle and is challenged in all his fears. The wounded Daryl climbs the cliff and returns to the farm and the unstable Andrea disobeys the instruction and shoots him believing that he is a walker. Maggie invites Glenn to have sex with her and he suggests in the barn. When Gleen arrives in the spot, he discovers a secret about Hershel Greene and his group.

Daryl helps them and when Merle is ready to pillage them, Daryl points his weapon to his brother and protects the family. Meanwhile Glenn questions the leadership of Rick to Hershel and wants to attack Woodbury, but Hershel convinces him that it will not be good and he leaves the prison to seek where the breach where the walkers are entering is. Out of the blue, the prison is attacked by The Governor and his men and he brings an armored truck full of walkers to release inside the prison. When the situation is hopeless, Glenn, Daryl and Merle arrive in the prison and help the group against the walkers and The Governor attack.

The Governor forces Daryl and Merle to fight against each other; however Rick and Maggie help them to escape from Woodbury and Andrea realizes that The Governor had lied to her. When Rick, Maggie and Daryl meet Glenn and Michonne outside Woodbury, they do not accept that Merle joins their group, but Daryl decides to stay with his older brother. Meanwhile in the prison, Hershel gives medical assistance to Tyreese's group but he warns that the group is larger but it is not up to him to decide whether they can stay or not with them. Back to Woodbury, people are panicking and some of them want to leave the town. However The Governor does not take any attitude towards the situation. Andrea assumes her leadership to calm down the dwellers. When Rick returns to the prison, he decides the fate of Tyreese's group against the will of Hershel but shows signs of insanity.

Maggie delivers abortion pills to Lori. Shane and Andrea break into a house trying to find Sophia and are surrounded by walkers. After they shoot their way out they have sex in the car. When they arrive at the farm, the jealous Dale suspects of them and has a conversation with Shane.

After the attack on the prison, Rick and the others have to decide what to do next. Rick is still recovering from his breakdown and the prison is again overrun with walkers. Andrea meanwhile is upset to learn of the shootout at the prison. The Governor assures her that it was Rick and his group who started the fighting. Now he says they have no choice but to attack the prison and eliminate their enemy. Andrea wants the opportunity to speak to her old friends and the Governor eventually agrees. She finds that her old friends aren't very welcoming as they're not sure they can trust her. She of course gets the truth about the attack and Carol suggests she kill the Governor in his sleep.

Maggie, Sasha and Bob are surrounded by walkers in a fog, but they succeed to survive killing them. Maggie decides to follow the railroad tracks heading to Terminus, a sanctuary where she believes she may find Glenn. However Sasha is reluctant and wants to stop in a safe building to stay protected. Maggie decides to leave her friends during the night to seek out Glenn alone and she leaves messages to Glenn telling that she is heading to Terminus. Meanwhile Daryl is training Beth with the crossbow, but she twists her ankle and cannot walk. They find a mortuary with stored food and supplies and the place is very clean indicating that someone might live there. They decide to stay in the place, but they are attacked by a horde of walkers and Daryl attracts the attention of them while Beth escapes through the window. When Daryl gets rid of the walkers, he sees that Beth has been abducted and he runs after the car with her. However he reaches a T-junction and he does not know they way to follow. Out of the blue, a group of armed men arrive and surrounds Daryl.

Everyone is on edge after the shooting of the walkers in the barn. Rick is questioning his leadership skills, Shane is violent, and Carol is grieving. Hershel realizes he made a mistake keeping them in the barn but now wants Rick and the others to leave the farm as soon as possible. Beth goes into shock, and when they survivors look for Hershel to help her, they can't find him. Maggie tells Rick he used to drink, but stopped when she was born; Rick figures he's probably gone into town to the local bar and taken up old habits. Glenn and Rick go to fetch him, but he wants to be left alone to get drunk. While trying to convince him to leave, two suspicious strangers enter the bar. Back at the farm, Dale tells Lori he is certain that Shane killed Otis to escape the walkers when he was caught out at the school. Driving into town to get them to come back, Lori has a serious accident.

Morgan seeks out Carol and finds a horse in the field. He rides the horse and finds Carol wounded, but she does not want any help. When Morgan explores the place to spend the night, Carol flees and he has to seek her out again. However she stumbles upon Roman that promises to kill her. Meanwhile in Alexandria, Rick, Abraham, Sasha, Eugene, Carl and Aaron take the sick Maggie in a recreation vehicle to a doctor in Hilltop. However, they find the saviors blocking the road and they need to drive through an alternative road. Soon they discover that the Saviors have blocked all the possible routes. When the night comes, the group decides to carry Maggie on a stretcher through the woods while Eugene drives the RV to lure the Saviors. However they are captured by the Saviors that bring Daryl, Michonne, Glenn and Rosita to join them. Negan appears and tells that one of them will die? Who might be the chosen one?

When they get to their destination, Glenn wants to secure the building and learn more about the area. Aiden however ignores him and they soon find themselves surrounded by walkers. It all leads to tragedy and unexpected losses. Deanna begins to wonder if it's wise to have so many of Rick's people in positions of authority. Father Gabriel adds to her worries.

During Gareth's barbecue with Bob's leg, Bob starts laughing and discloses that he had been bitten by a walker, and Gareth kicks his head. Sasha finds Bob unconscious and the survivors bring him to the church. Bob tells the truth to his friends and Sasha stays with him while Rick plots the defense of the church against Gareth and the other cannibals. Father Gabriel tells that he is damned and reveals what had happened in the church. Meanwhile there is tension in the group since Sargeant Abraham Ford wants to head to Washington with Eugene and Rosita in the church bus while Rick wants to wait for Daryl and Carol. When Rick and his friends leave the church to chase Gareth and his gang, the cannibals break in the church and the small group that stays there is threatened.
After Bob had awoken on the camp of the last few survivors of Terminus to find out that they had feasted on his leg, he laughs hysterically at the cannibals to reveal he had been bitten on the shoulder, to then be knocked out with a punt kick to the face by Gareth. The group at the church then take notice of his disappearance and suspect their untrustworthy host, Gabriel, who reveals that he had locked out people in the beginning of the outbreak. Bob's body, still alive, was discovered by outside, and then they took him in, and he revealed he had been bitten and that the people of Terminus had took him captive. Rick then discusses a plan to invade their camp, but tension builds as Abraham wants to leave on the church bus but Rick wants to wait for the rest of their group to return. Once they leave the church, the cannibals invade and the group that had stayed are threatened. Although the cannibals' plan is going well, they realize how wrong they were to mess with Rick's group.

She steals a letter that is left on the table but Armory takes the letter from him and heads to Twyn. Arya finds Jaqen and tells that Armory is the second one that must immediately die. When the group is returning to the castle through the streets of King's Landing, they are attacked by starving people. The Hound saves Sansa that was going to be raped. Beyond the Wall, the party fights against the Wildings and only a woman named Ygritte survives. Jon Snow is assigned to kill her but Jon hesitated and holds her as prisoner. In Qarth, Daenery's guards are murdered and the three dragons are stolen while she is negotiating ships with the Spice King.

Osha wakes up early in the dawn and leaves Theon's room, stabs a guard and flees with Bran, Rickon and Hodor. Tywin believes that the murder of Amory was an attempt against his life and orders Gregor to burn villages to the ground. Sansa menstruates during the night and tries to hide it with Shaw but they are surprised by The Hound and Sansa has a meeting with Cersei. Jaime kills Alton Lannister in his cell and when Torrhen comes to see, he strangles him and flees. However he is captured and Lord Rickard wants to kill him for the death of his son Torrhen but Catelyn protects Jaime. Jon Snow searches the Night's Watch patrol with Ygritte and she leads him to an ambush. Daenerys finds who had stolen her dragons, as part of a coup d' etat in Qarth.

At Harrenhal, Arya identifies the last of the three lives Jaquen H'ghar promised her for saving him. Robb is dismayed at the deal his mother has made with Jamie Lannister and places her under arrest. Danerys refuses to leave Qarth without her dragons and decides to retrieve them from the House of the Undying. Stannis and his army approach King's Landing from the sea. Tyrion plans for the defense of the city but Cersei wants him to keep her son King Jeoffrey out of the fighting. He realizes that he must take steps to protect Shae.
Jon Snow is brought to the Lord of Bones that wants to kill him, but Ygritte saves him claiming that he is a Stark. Jon sees that Halfhand that was captured and he wants Jon as a spy of the Wildings. Luwin sees Osha in the crypt and she shows Bran and Rickon alive, and the burned bodies belonged to the farm boys. Stannis and his fleet is arriving to King's Landing and Tyrion is plotting a plan to defend the castle, while Joffrey shows a false courage. Robb arrests Catelyn for releasing Jaime Lannister from his cell to exchange him for her two daughters.

Meereen is under siege and the fleet of the masters is attacking the city. Daenerys wants to destroy their cities but Tyrion convinces her to not incur in the same mistake of her father in King's Landing. In Winterfell, Jon Snow, Sansa, Davos and Tormund meet with Ramsay, and Jon Snow proposes a dispute between them instead of sacrificing lives in a battle. Ramsay does not accept and they schedule the battle in the morning. Jon Snow plots a scheme with Davos and Tormund and Sansa warns that Ramsay plays dirty. In the land of Winterfell, Lord Ned Stark begins to believe that something is amiss. Meanwhile, in the land across the narrow sea, Viserys Targaryen needs an army to attack King's Landing and retake the throne that he believes is rightfully his. He arranges for his pretty sister Daenerys to marry warlord Khal Drogo.

Sansa believes that Baelish's desire to help her is because he loved her mother. Shae explains the nature of men to her. Samwell Tarley is having trouble keeping up as what remains of the Night's Watch as they try to reach the Wall. Arya is also trying to get to Riverrun but she and her companions meet up with the Brotherhood without Banners. At a nearby tavern, someone recognizes her.

Sansa arrives at Black Castle with Brienne and Podrick and reunites to Jon Snow, who has resigned from the Night's Watch after the deception of the betrayal of his brothers. Sansa tries to convince him to attack and retake Winterfell while Brienne meets Davos and Melisandre and warns that she killed Stannis and she does not forget or forgive the assassination of Renly through black magic. Littlefinger returns to Runestone and is welcomed by his nephew Robin and convinces him to send his army to protect Sansa at Castle Black. In Meereen, Tyrion negotiates a truce and the end of the support to the Sons of Harpy with the masters of Slaver's Bay. Jorah and Daario arrive at Vaes Dothrak and they meet Daenerys that explains a plan to them. Margaery meets the High Sparrow and he tells how he learned the truth. Tommen tells to Cersei that Margaery will be exposed to the people soon, and Cersei plots a scheme with Olenna to destroy the High Sparrow. Theon returns to the Iron Island and after a cold reception of Yara, he tells that he wants to support her. Ramsey stabs Osha with a knife killing her in Winterfell. Jon Snow receives a letter from Ramsey with insults and threatening him. Daenerys is brought to the khals in a temple and the set in motion her evil plan.

Robb and his entourage are traveling to the Freys but wet weather has delayed them. Talisa has big news for him. For his part, Tyrion thinks she's too young. Shae is also unhappy with Tyrion's upcoming marriage and she wants them to run away. Jaime begins his trip to King's Landing but refuses to leave Brienne behind. Theon Greyjoy is comforted by two young ladies but his captor has something else in mind.

Arya arrives in Braavos and goes to the House of Black and White but is refused admittance. After several days, the man who refused her entry finds her living on the streets and takes her to the House where he reveals his true identity. In Mereen, one of the men killing the Unsullen is arrested and Daenerys orders that he stand trial. When the assassin killed, she has the murderer executed earning her the enmity of the slaves she has freed. Brienne finally comes across Sansa, who makes it clear she is not in need of protection. In Dorne, Ellaria Sand wants Doran Martell to seek revenge for the death of his brother. In King's Landing, Cersei takes charge of the small council and Jaime sets off for Dorne to collect Myrcella. At the Wall, the men of the Watch select a new commander.

A calmer King Robert mends fences with Ned Stark and reinstates him as the King's Hand despite the objections of his wife Cersei. While he goes hunting with his brother Renly he puts Ned on the throne. Ned decides to send Arya and Sansa back to Winterfell for their protection. Sansa in particular doesn't want to leave saying she wants to marry Joffre and have blond babies. Brienne and Pod meet Arya and The Hound and Brienne has a deadly sword fight with The Hound to keep Arya. Bran, Jojen, his sister and Hodo reach their target but they are attacked by Wights.
John Snow arrives at Raydor's encampment claiming to want to negotiate a truce but intent on something else altogether. He is soon found out but help comes from an unexpected source. Brienne and Pod come across the Hound and Arya. When she realizes who Arya is, she feels it's her duty to fight the Hound and return her to her family. Even Arya has other ideas. At King's Landing, Cersei wants her father to cancel her engagement to Loras. As far as he is concerned, the marriage is needed now more than ever but Cersei threatens to reveal her secret if he doesn't agree. Jaime and Varys assist Tyrion in escaping from his cell. Before he leaves the city he calls on his father and there finds Shae in his father's bed. He takes care of both of them. In the east, Daenerys has to deal with her dragons, the cause of death and destruction throughout the countryside.

In Braavos, Arya grows weary of living in the House of Black and White where no one will explain to her just what she is meant to be doing. She finally learns what they do with the bodies she has been washing when they take them through the door she has been forbidden to go past. Ser Jorah and Tyrion continue to make do with few rations and Jorah learns that his father died north of the wall. They also encounter slavers who take them to Slaver's Bay where Ser Jorah is to fight in the pits. Littlefinger returns to King's Landing telling Cersei of the forthcoming battle between the Boltons and King Stannis. In return for his assistance in fighting the eventual winner, he asks her to name him Warden of the North. Lady Oleanna returns to obtain the release of her grandson but the High Sparrow's inquest into his behavior does not go well - nor does it go well for Queen Margaery. In Dorne, Trystane wants Marcelle to marry him as soon as possible. As Jaime and Bronn arrive in the capital, the Sand Snakes are waiting for them. At Winterfell, Sansa's wedding day arrives.
