Film executive, songwriter ("Yale Blues", "Basic Boogie") and composer, educated at Amherst College and a student of Chester Griffin. In 1936, he formed his own orchestra, then became music director at CBS, and went to New York in 1938, joining an advertising agency's radio department. He also had been a road manager for the Jack Jenny and Count Basie orchestras, and then a personal manager. He was the executive vice president of Chrislaw Productions. Joining ASCAP in 1942, his chief musical collaborators included Count Basie, Bob Russell, and Henry Nemo. His other popular-song compositions include "Hip Hip Hooray", "Coming Out Party", "Tune Town Shuffle", "Song of the Casbah", and "Dance of the Gremlins".
