John D. Robinson was born in Brisbane, Australia, the youngest of three children. Attending high school in the suburbs of his hometown, his favorite subject was drama because of the chance to create and perform art. Struggling to find his niche in the "real" world after high school, John eventually found work in the employment industry. He answered phones, worked with long term unemployed people, trained computer and business courses, and, somehow, managed to write the screenplay for Devour (2011).
A horror film buff, his favorite directors in the genre are John Carpenter -- Vampires (1998) -- , Wes Craven -- Scream (1996) -- and grandmaster George A. Romero -- Night of the Living Dead (1968). Hong Kong action cinema had a profound impact on his life, he was exposed to early John Woo films initially in the mid 90's, it opened up his eyes to international cinema. The Killer (1989), especially with it's use of violence and gun play to tell a story about brotherhood, love and the true meaning of loyalty. He also calls Hard Boiled (1992) his favorite "balls to the wall" action film" of all time. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997) creator Joss Whedon is a major influence on John's work and someone he admires greatly, because he brings humor to the horror/sci-fi genre, something which John has done (or at least hopes he has done) with Devour (2011). When asked about why he started writing, John said two movies made in believe in cinema. The first being Clerks (1994), written and directed by Kevin Smith . It showed him the power of the written word and that the script is sometimes bigger than the film on the screen. Kevin Smith remains a major influence on his work. The second film is Fight Club (1999) directed by David Fincher . It provided the inspiration to make films that can change the way people think while delivering an entertaining film. Another director who John admires is Guy Ritchie. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) and Snatch (2000) are both high on his list of personal favorites.
An avid reader, his favorite writers are Australian author Nick Earls , horror novelist Brian Keene, Dresden Files author Jim Butcher , author of the Nighside Series, Simon R Green, Gil's All Fright Diner and In the Company of Ogres scribe, A. Lee Martinez, Chuck Palahniuk , writer of the Burke series Andrew Vachss and Robert B. Parker .
Married in 2002, John and his wife Elizabeth became somewhat of a team. Quite unintentionally. Several weeks before they were due to be married, Elizabeth showed him a picture of her during her high school days. Immediately struck with inspiration, the characters, story and script all fell into place. Basing the lead character (Erin) on Elizabeth, the ambitious horror/comedy immediately drew attention from producers in Australia, Germany, South Africa, Ireland and the United States.
After rewriting and polishing the script, with many notes from his editor/wife, the script that had strong female characters, snappy dialogue and over the top sexuality combined with gore and violence was eventually picked up by independent producers based out of Boston.
John resides in Cincinnati, Ohio with his wife and their three dogs -- Blake, a 13 year old Cocker Spaniel, Bella, a 2 year old black Labrador Retriever and new puppy Finn, a yellow lab.
