Joe Collins is a Director/DP based out of Brooklyn, NY. He graduated from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Telecommunication at Arizona State University with a BS in Broadcasting in 1987. After graduating, he spent 2 years working as a camera prep tech at General Camera in NY, joining local 644, now the International Cinematographers Guild, in 1990. Joe spent the next decade working as a Camera Assistant, initially as a trainee under East Coast 1st AC legends Scott Rathner and Vinny Gerardo, then working his way up as a 2nd AC, and ultimately to 1st AC. He worked on a wide variety of productions, from commercials, music videos, tv series, to feature films during the 90's. His feature credits include "A Bronx Tale", "Glengarry GlenRoss", "Forest Gump", "Carlito's Way" and John Singleton's remake of "Shaft". His music video credits include shoots for ACDC, Madonna, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Anthrax, Naughty By Nature, Paul McCartney, and Mariah Carey. TV credits included "Spin City", "NYPD Blue", and "Sex And The City". Notable DP's he worked for included Tak Fulimoto ASC, Ed Lachman ASC, John Alonzo ASC, Andrzej Batkowiak ASC, Crescenzo Notarile ASC, Peter Deming ASC, and Stuart Dryburgh ASC. In 2001, while on "Sex And The City", Joe changed his card to operator and spent the next 8 years behind the camera, working mostly on feature films and occasionally on episodic series. His feature credits here include "Michael Clayton", "PS I Love You", "27 Dresses" and "Sex And The City-The Movie". While operating, he also began shooting 2nd Units, and additional photography for the projects he was working on. Notable DP's he operated and shot for include Robert Elswit ASC, John Bailey ASC, Checco Varese ASC, Terry Stacey ASC, and Alik Sakharov ASC. In 2009, Joe took over the DP duties on the series "Ugly Betty" and has been shooting ever since. He has shot Emmy winning series for HBO, HBO Max, Amazon, Apple, Showtime, CBS, NBC, ABC, AMC, and the USA Network. His features include movies for Fox Searchlight, Universal/Dreamworks/Amblin, and Hulu. Joe's work has taken him all over the USA and all around the world. Countries include Ireland, England, Spain, France, Monaco, Italy, Hungary, South Africa, Hong Kong, Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean. In 2013, Joe joined the DGA and is an active episodic director in addition to his work as a Cinematographer. Believing that "nothing is achieved easily" I worked on Realms while working a full time job to support my family. I have also written a short film Quiet on the Set that is in the early phases of development.
