Brian Cox is an Emmy Award-winning Scottish actor. He was born on June 1, 1946 in Dundee, Scotland, to Mary Ann Guillerline Cox, maiden surname McCann, a spinner, and Charles McArdle Campbell Cox, a shopkeeper and butcher. His father was of Irish ancestry and his mother was of Irish and Scottish descent.
Cox first came to attention in the early 1970s with performances in numerous television films. His first big break was as Dr. Hannibal Lecter in Manhunter (1986). The film was not overly successful at the box office, although Cox's career prospects and popularity continued to develop. Through the 1990s, he appeared in nearly 20 films and television series, as well as making numerous television guest appearances. More recently, Cox has had roles in some major films, including The Corruptor (1999), The Ring (2002) and X2: X-Men United (2003). He was awarded Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 2003 Queen's New Year's Honours List for his services to drama.- Actor

Cox's first film as writer/director was the short The Obit Writer, starring Norman Mailer and Mira Sorvino, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival. His first feature film Scorpion Spring, which he also wrote and directed, starred Matthew McConaughey, Reuben Blades, Alfred Molina and Esai Morales, premiered at Sundance, and featured a score by famed Mission Impossible composer Lalo Schifrin. He wrote and directed Keepin' It Real, starring Platinum-selling rap artist Kurupt, which was nominated for two DVD Premiere Awards, including best script. He also wrote and directed El Muerto, starring Wilmer Valderrama, which was based upon the Mexican-American comic book character created by Javier Hernandez. As writer/producer, credits include the remake of Hideo Nakata's Don't Look Up, directed by Fruit Chan; comedian Faizon Love's Tao of the Golden Mask, a send-up of Asian martial arts films of the 70s; AmericanEast starring Monk's Tony Shalhoub; Kite, adapted from the infamous Japanese anime and starring Samuel L. Jackson; and Shepherds and Butchers starring Steve Coogan and Andrea Riseborough, which won an audience award at the Berlin Film Festival. He is a screenwriting fellow of both the Film Independent's "No Borders" script development program and the Film Independent Screenwriter's Lab. For his screenplay on the 10-year feud between William F. Buckley, Jr. and Gore Vidal (About Face), he was voted an honoree in the 2017 Writers Guild of America's Feature Writers Access Project. As producer, credits include the Dimension Films' remake of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Pulse, which led to two sequels; Chain of Desire, starring Malcolm McDowell and Linda Fiorentino; Terminal Bliss, with Luke Perry; Tsui Hark's Zu Warriors; the MTV release of Kim Tae-Gyun's Volcano High with Snoop Dogg; the Taiwanese puppets series Wu Lin Warriors for Cartoon Network; and the Egyptian drama Cairo Exit which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. He was also an associate producer on Justin Chadwick's Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and Atom Egoyan's Remember starring Christopher Plummer and Martin Landau, and an executive producer on the Los Angeles Film Festival's "Nightfall" winner Serpent; Pantelion's Spanish-language comedy Un Padre No Tan Padre, and Alonso Ruizpalacios' film Museo starring Gael Garcia Bernal.- Composer
