Aaron was raised in Harlem, NY and moved to the Bronx, NY as a kid. Aaron found inspiration to act during his time in college. He attended Bronx Community College. While there, he landed lead roles in 3 stage plays. Aaron's energy harnesses the power to light up the room and electrify his audience's. Aaron now enjoys working both in front of the camera as an actor and also thrives behind the scenes when doing production and assisting the director work. Born in Springfield, Oregon in 1961, Aaron Kirk Douglas attended Springfield public schools including Thurston High. He graduated in 1983 from the nationally recognized School of Journalism at the University of Oregon.
Aaron began the formative years of his career in radio and television broadcast news and then earned his paralegal degree, focusing on paralegal work and then as a law firm marketing and business development professional. He has worked for some of the most well known law firms in the Pacific Northwest including Lane Powell, Barran Liebman and Miller Nash. Since 2006 he has been employed in marketing for the multifamily commercial real estate firm HFO Investment Real Estate.
In 2003 he returned to school to study filmmaking. His first documentary "My Days of Awe and Grief: Dirk and Me" was awarded the best documentary prize at the May, 2004 Forest Film Festival in Portland.
His first feature film, "Freedom State," premiered in March, 2006 at Cinequest and then screened at numerous other festivals. Freedom State, a quirky narrative about the adventures of a lonely housewife and her mental health home colleagues after the apocalypse, was distributed by IndieFlix of Seattle, Washington and has been available off and on through Amazon Prime.
Aaron's first documentary feature was "The Man You Had in Mind" featuring the music of gay icon Eric Himan in 2006. This documentary, about five gay male couples, is distributed by Cinema Epoch and was dubbed into Hebrew, German and Russian for broadcasting internationally in Israel/West Bank and Gaza, along with Germany and Russia in 2007. It won a bronze Telly award.
Aaron produced "Monster Camp" with director Cullen Hoback. Monster Camp, a documentary about live action role-players in the Pacific Northwest, screened at nearly 40 film festivals around the world, winning four awards for best documentary including the audience award at Cinequest in San Jose. Monster Camp is distributed by Gravitas Ventures. The film enjoyed a limited 8-city theatrical release before being released on DVD to Hollywood Video outlets, Netflix and Amazon Prime. Monster Camp has aired in Australia on the ABC television network and for a substantial time remained one of the most popular films for Netflix subscribers in Portland, Oregon.
Aaron also associate produced a film called "Veer" about America's bicycle culture. The film premiered in January 2009 at the Victoria (BC) International Film Festival and screened over 30 times in May 2009 at venues across the country as part of national bicycling month, including a May, 2009 screening at the Lincoln Center in NYC.
Aaron co-wrote a musical titled "Planet Eden" with Kurt Crowley, who is the original music director and co-conductor for the musical Hamilton on Broadway. The musical had three separate staged readings and received a $6,000 grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council for the most recent reading. Following it's last staged reading in 2011, Mr. Douglas gave the progress a rest but in 2023 began work on it anew and aims to have another staged reading by 2025. His creation will move forward with the help of his longtime friend, Jordan K. Crawford.
Mr. Douglas' memoir. "Growing Up Twice: Shaping a Future by Reliving My Past" was published by Newsworthy Books in 2016. The audiobook version was released in 2017. The book won awards from Readers' Favorite for both the paperback and audiobook versions. It is available on Amazon in electronic and paperback formats, and on Amazon Audible, read by the author.
