Alda, born Fanny Jane Davis, came from a strong musical background. Her maternal grandparents, Fanny and Martin Simonsen, were important opera impresarios in Australasia during the 1870s and 1880s. Five of their children, including Fanny's mother, Leonore, were professional singers, and one, Frances Saville, achieved fame in Europe as a member of the Viennese Hofoper. Fanny's father, David Davis, a merchant, was a gifted amateur musician and some of her paternal relatives sang in J. C. Williamson's light opera companies.
Although Alda spent little time in the country of her birth, she consistently described herself as a New Zealander. After revisiting the country during an Australasian recital tour in 1927, her adherence to New Zealand became wholehearted. She maintained contact with several paternal relatives, and, despite a precautionary acquisition of American citizenship in 1939, she continued to emphasize her New Zealand origins.
For much of her career she was handicapped by her marriage, at New York, on April 3, 1910, to the Met's general manager, Giulio Gatti-Casazza. His need to avoid any hint of favoritism restricted her opportunities, while she felt a continual need to prove her artistic worth - as much to herself as the public. She divorced him in 1928; they had no children. On April 14, 1941, in Charleston, South Carolina, she married New York advertising executive Ray Vir Den. That union was also childless.
Alda spent an affluent retirement, entertaining lavishly at her Long Island home and indulging in her passion for travel. She died of a cerebral hemorrhage in Venice, Italy on September 18, 1952, aged 73.- Eve Balfour was born on 3 May 1890 in Christchurch, New Zealand. Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, Ellory Elkayem began making films as a teenager. At 18, he attended a film school designed to give students practical experience and preparation for a career in the film business. He learned the ropes first hand while, working in the camera department on commercials, music videos, and TV shows such as 'The New Adventures of the Black Stallion' starring Mickey Rooney.
During this time, Ellory also made several short films with support from the New Zealand Arts Council. His big break came with, 'Larger Than Life', a 13 minute, black and white, VFX-driven homage to the 1950's Hollywood horror genre featuring a giant, man-eating spider.
Produced by Academy Award winner Jamie Selkirk and financed with a grant from the New Zealand Film Commission, 'Larger Than Life' received critical acclaim at the 1998 Telluride Film Festival and later caught the eye of heavyweight Hollywood producers, Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich. ('Independence Day'). Emmerich and Devlin then hired Ellory to write and direct 'Eight-Legged Freaks', a 30 million dollar feature film based on 'Larger Than Life', starring David Arquette and Scarlett Johansson, and distributed by Warner Brothers.
In 2000, while in development on Eight Legged Freaks, Ellory directed 'They Nest', a television movie for USA Networks starring Dean Stockwell and John Savage. The movie, also known as 'Creepy Crawlers', told the tale of a small New England town infested with an exotic breed of killer cockroaches.
In 2001 Ellory directed 'Eight Legged Freaks' and in 2002, the film was released to rave reviews.
In 2004 Ellory went to Romania to direct two zombie movies, back to back. 'Return of the Living Dead - Necropolis', and 'Return of the Living Dead - Rave from the Grave', starring Peter Coyote.
In 2008 Ellory directed the comedy sequel 'Without A Paddle-Nature's Calling' for Paramount.

Hern recently co-wrote, produced and directed his first drama series, The Panthers, about The Polynesian Panthers; a group of street-gangsters-turned-social-revolutionaries. The series broke streaming records in New Zealand before being picked up by Endeavor Content and premiering at TIFF 2021 (as one of only four series in the programme). The Panthers was nominated for Best Limited Series at the emmy qualifying Banff Rockie Awards and is currently being released in multiple territories around the globe.
After starting out as an actor; Hern broke onto the international scene as a creative producer with his production The Dark Horse (2015); a gritty-based-on-a-true-story-drama, directed by his friend, James Napier Robertson. TDH launched at TIFF to glowing reviews, sales to all major territories and Oscar-buzz for Cliff Curtis's transformative performance. The film went on to win Audience Awards at the Rotterdam, San Francisco, Seattle and Palm Springs International Film Festivals and was a box office smash in its home territory.
Later, alongside Occupant Entertainment, Hern produced the high-octane action-comedy, Guns Akimbo (starring Samara Weaving and Daniel Radcliffe) and the grippingly-mad-action-horror, Shadow in the Cloud (starring Chloë Grace Moretz and directed by Roseanne Liang) which won the TIFF 2020 Midnight Madness Award.
Hern sat on the International Jury for the Berlin Film Festival (Generation Section) in 2015 and won the pitching prize at the MIFF 37 Degrees South market in Melbourne in 2016. He won the Moa-award for "Best Film" at the 2014 New Zealand Film Awards for The Dark Horse (and was a dual nominee that year, also getting a nod for eery festival darling, Everything We Loved). In 2022, Hern won a Pacific Music Award, for Best Video Director.
Hern is a principal of two companies; Four Knights Film (the producer's of James Napier Robertson's intense ballet drama, Joika) and Tavake (who are, as of September 2022, in early pre production on ethical-prostitution dramedy series, Madame Mom.
