Vasiliy started to train in 1960. In 1961 he entered the Arkhangelsk Forestry Institute. In 1961, he was awarded the first sports category in volleyball, and also he was involved in athletics. Having switched to weightlifting, he began to train under the guidance of coach Semyon Mileyko. Graduated from the Shakhty branch of the Novocherkassk Polytechnic Institute. In July 1971, at the final competitions of the 5th Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR, in one evening, he made seven amendments to the table of world achievements.
