Big Fish (2003)
Big Fish an Excellent Movie...and that's no Tall Tale!
Tim Burton has done it again. He is such an amazing director. One of the reasons he is so amazing is the creativity and originality his movies have. And this is the most creative, original movie of the 21st century. The concept to this movie is brilliant and Burton takes that concept and turns it into one of the best movies I've ever seen.
I think one of the reasons this movie draws us in so much is that we can all relate to some level with it. We all use hyperbole to exaggerate the truth, but it doesn't change the fact that there is a depth of it which is true.
Also, the acting in this movie is superb.
If you're looking for something different from the remakes and same old ideas, this is the movie for you. I could watch this every day and still not get bored of the story...it's that good.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
Some Treasures Shouldn't Be Buried
This is one of those treasures.
I went into this movie with lots of expectation thanks to the the first installment of the trilogy being so amazing. The problem with expectation is that it is easily disappointed. That's why it's that much more amazing that this movie surpassed my high expectation.
Once again, the story is fantastically written. I was held captive in my seat throughout the entirety of the movie. And the ending was so compelling that I wish the third movie came out tomorrow.
The creatures were kind of weird bringing this trilogy even more into the fantastical realm, but due to the quality of the storyline and how well they fit with the plot, I couldn't imagine the movie without them. This was the one thing I was unsure about in the previews.
The acting was excellent also. This cast was so well chosen.
Some people have complained about the lack of ending in this movie. However, like any other good trilogy (i.e. Lord of the Rings) the second movie shouldn't have an ending. A trilogy is best done when one story is spread out over multiple movies. This is what makes it a trilogy and not just three separate movies which share a similar name. Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers is best when seen in conjunction with Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. That's what makes it good. The first Pirates can stand alone as there was an ending of sorts. In the second one, they've done a good job of connecting it with the first one. Still, once the third one comes out, everyone will be happy that they did the second one as they did. It's tough to rate a trilogy when you haven't seen all 3 parts. People tried to do that with X-Men. It had a good first movie and amazing second movie. The problem is that the second movie was so good, the third one seemed bad in comparison. They made the mistake of climaxing in the second installment. The third movie should always be the best in a trilogy and the second the "worst" or else it just won't work. If At World's End is amazing, everyone will speak of how amazing the trilogy is and no one will complain about Dead Man's Chest.
Then only question which remains is will the third live up to the hype due to the amazing quality of the first two. That question will be answered at world's end.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Praises not Curses on the Black Pearl
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is one of my all-time favorite movies. I forgot how much I truly loved it until I watched it again to prep myself for the sequel. Here are a few reasons why it is a such a great movie:
1. Original - A lot should be said for original movies. One of the things which makes this movie so great is that it is an original movie. In this generation of re-makes, comics turned movies, real-life stories turned movies, it is wonderful to be able to watch an original piece of work which is different from others you may pull off the shelf.
2. Good mix of genres - This movie is an action movie which uses wonderful humor, and yet also has a sort of sci-fi feel to it, with dramatic undertones. This is a difficult task for movies to accomplish, and the people who worked on this movie did a wonderful job of it. I think they used appropriate amounts of humor and drama mixed with a lot of action to keep you involved at every emotional level.
3. Great acting - Johnny Depp is my favorite actor. He has an amazing ability to transform into his character. In this movie, he displays this ability to us yet once again. It's like you forget Johnny Depp is in the movie and you think that Capt. Jack Sparrow is a real individual. Some people I have spoken with thought he was a little over the top, but it was his extreme acting that helped make this movie such a success. When you mix in the attractive, well-acting Keira Knightley (who looks stunning in this movie) and the superb acting of Orlando Bloom (I'm becoming a big fan of his) and Geoffrey Rush, you have a melting pot of great acting.
4. Fun story - Sure there may be a hole or two in the story, but if you look hard enough, you'll find some in every movie. That being said, this was an amazingly fun story. I could not help but to be entertained as the story moved along. I didn't want the story to end, and thanks to the second and third movies coming out, it won't!
5. Clean - There are not many clean movies made anymore. It's nice to have a great movie which has no language issues or sensual scenes. This is almost impossible to find these days. This movie is proof that you can make a great, clean movie for both adults and children (if they don't get spooked easily) to enjoy.
I could add some more items, but these 5 should be enough to show why this was such an excellent movie. I can only hope that the second and third ones match up to the standards which the first one has set.
