In popular folklore, vampires were undead beings that visited loved ones and caused mischief or deaths in the neighborhoods they inhabited when they were alive. They wore shrouds and were often described as bloated and of ruddy or dark countenance. In the 19th century, vampires were commonly portrayed as gaunt and pale.
Nowadays, they usually don't look so scary anymore. In fact, Hollywood's idea of modern vampires is often quite appealing.
