He also defended a badly wounded Faramir from Denethor burning him alive, and later fought at the Battle of the Black Gate. Unlike the film version, it was Erkenbrand, not Eomer, who came with Gandalf to aid the defenders of Hornburg, during the Battle of Helm's Deep, which resulted in the turning point of the battle and eventual victory of the Free Peoples.

AFTER THE WAR OF THE RING: King Eomer named him Marshal of the West-mark.

    GLORFINDEL (ELF)

WHO IS HE: Glorfindel was one of the mightiest Elves still inhabiting Middle-Earth. A veteran of the wars against Angmar, he even made the Witch-kingflee from him, by simply showing up on the battlefield.

DURING THE WAR OF THE RING: He was dispatched by Elrond to search for Frodo and bring him to safety, since the Nazgul feared Glorfindel's power. Unlike the film version, it was Glorfindel, not Arwen, who saved Frodo, by carrying him on horseback to Rivendell, all while being pursued by the Black Riders. At the Council of Elrond, he was considered as a possible member of the Fellowship of the Ring, but Gandalf noted that his great power (and therefore, greater visibility to the Enemy) would be of little use in their mission of secrecy.

AFTER THE WAR OF THE RING: Attended the wedding of Aragorn and Arwen, but it is not known when (or if) he sailed away to the Undying Lands.

They came to help Aragorn (their Chieftain), and followed him through the hardships of the Paths of the Dead, port of Pelargir and the Battle of Pelennor Fields, where Halbarad proudly carried Aragorn's battle standard.

AFTER THE WAR OF THE RING: He was killed during the war, at the Battle of Pelennor Fields.

DURING THE WAR OF THE RING: Alongside one companion, Hirgon narrowly escaped Orcish patrols, and successfully brought the Red Arrow from Steward Denethor of Gondor, to King Theoden of Rohan. However, he and his companion were killed by Orcs on their return, so Denethor never got the message that Rohirrim were coming to the aid of Gondor.

AFTER THE WAR OF THE RING: Killed during the war.

DURING THE WAR OF THE RING: He came to the aid of Gondor with a company of Swan Knights and 700 soldiers - definitely the strongest force during the defence of Minas Tirith prior to the coming of the Rohirrim. Acting as one of the leading commanders in both the Battle of Pelennor Fields and the Battle of the Black Gate, Imrahil had many heroic feats, like saving Faramir when he was retreating from Osgiliath.

AFTER THE WAR OF THE RING: He became an advisor and one of the chief military commanders of King Elessar (Aragorn), while also becoming a part of the Great Council of Gondor. His daughter Lothiriel was wedded to King Eomer of Rohan.

    IORETH (MAN)

WHO IS SHE: Ioreth was an old healing-woman of Minas Tirith, who had great knowledge about healing lore, folk-tales and old sayings.

DURING THE WAR OF THE RING: After the Battle of Pelennor Fields, she told Gandalf an old saying: "The hands of the King are the hands of a healer". This inspired him to bring Aragorn to the Houses of Healing, where he saved the lives of many wounded (including Eowyn and Faramir), using the athelas plant. She was very talkative, much to the annoyance of Aragorn and Gandalf.

AFTER THE WAR OF THE RING: Unknown. She probably stayed in Minas Tirith, continuing her work of healing and gossiping.

    QUICKBEAM (ENT)

WHO IS HE: Quickbeam was one of the youngest Ents of Fangorn Forest, known for his unusual hastiness. He gained that nickname when another Ent asked him a question, and he answered before the question was finished - a rare thing for an Ent to do.

DURING THE WAR OF THE RING: When the Ents were deciding whether to attack Isengard or not, he was the first among them to say 'yes'. While the other Ents were still arguing at the Entmoot, Treebeard sent Merry and Pippin to Quickbeam, to shelter the Hobbits at his home. He participated in the Siege of Isengard, nearly capturing Saruman.

AFTER THE WAR OF THE RING: Alive and well, he was hanging around with Treebeard, in the flooded valley of Isengard.

Sylvester McCoy in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)

    RADAGAST THE BROWN (MAIA)

WHO IS HE: Radagast was a Wizard, a member of the same Wizard Order (the Istari) as Gandalf and Saruman. He was a friend of animals - especially birds, and a master of shapes and natural lore. However, he didn't care much about playing a part in the major events of Middle-earth, which was a task of all Istari. His place of living was called Rhosgobel, located at the edge of Mirkwood.

DURING THE WAR OF THE RING: Radagast warned Gandalf that the Nazgul are searching the Shire for the One Ring, and also told him to meet with Saruman, not knowing of his betrayal. That led Gandalf to be imprisoned by Saruman, but he was saved by the Eagle-Lord Gwaihir, who was sent by Radagast to scout the area and gather informations about the moving of the enemies.

AFTER THE WAR OF THE RING: Unknown. He probably remained in Rhosgobel, uninterested in big things that happened (and that will happen) in Middle-earth.

Robbie Coltrane in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)

    TOM BOMBADIL AND GOLDBERRY (UNKNOWN)

WHO ARE THEY: Tom Bombadil was a ancient and mysterious entity, immensely powerful within his realm - not even being affected by the power of the One Ring. His wife Goldberry (daughter of the River-Woman) was wise, beautiful, and had an enchanting singing voice. They lived in a house located between the dangerous Old Forest and the haunted Barrow Dows.

DURING THE WAR OF THE RING: They supplied the Four Hobbits with food, advice, and safe lodging for several days. Tom also saved them from the evil Old Man Willow, rescued them from a barrow inhabited by the undead barrow-wights, and gave them four magical daggers (one of which Merry used to wound the the Witch-king).

AFTER THE WAR OF THE RING: Unknown. They probably continued to live peacefully in their realm.
